14 Appeasement Britain and France practiced appeasement prior to the start of World War II. Britain & France allowed Germany to do what it wanted (appeasement). To appease is to please.

15 Appeasement 1936: Germany reoccupies the Rhineland > Britain condemns Germany. 1938: Germany takes over Austria > Britain allows it, but makes Germany promise not to take over anymore territory. 1939: Germany invades Czechoslovakia > Britain & France condemn Germany’s actions.

16 Munich Conference September 29, 1938: Meeting between France, Britain, Germany, & Italy Germany was given land & Germany promised not to take anymore land Hitler is given the Sudetenland 6 months later Hitler takes the rest of Czechoslovakia

18 Germany invades Poland
September 1, 1939 Germany invades Poland German planes came in and bombed while the infantry attacked from the ground. Warsaw, the capital of Poland was bombed relentlessly. The city was destroyed. Two days later, France and Britain decided to declare war on Germany once they invaded Poland. But Poland still fell within a few weeks, because Britain and France were not ready to respond militarily.

21 On April 9th, 1940, Hitler invaded Denmark and Norway.
Denmark was defeated in 4 hours. Norway was defeated after a couple of months. Hitler used these lands so that he could build bases along the coast from which he could attack Britain.

May 26-June 4 Dunkirk evacuation, code named Operation Dynamo it took place from may 26 to June In nine days, more than three hundred thousand (338,226) soldiers — 218,226 British and 120,000 French were rescued by a hastily assembled fleet of about seven hundred boats. These craft included the famous "Little Ships of Dunkirk These small craft ferried troops from the beaches to larger ships waiting offshore.

June 14: Paris falls June 22: France surrenders The Germans took control of the Northern part of the country and let the southern part be ruled by a puppet government.

25 On June 16, 1940, the French cabinet voted to ask Germany for armistice terms. In order to completely humiliate the French, Hitler insisted on receiving their surrender inside the same railroad car in which the Germans had surrendered to the Allies at the end of World War I.
