D-Day – June 6, 1944 Canadians landed at Juno Beach. They were the only allied force to meet objectives – 335 dead, 735 wounded Canadian troops fighting up through Italy while the rest were moving through Northern France May 5, 1945: German generals surrender the Netherlands to Canadians Meanwhile, the Soviets were advancing on Berlin (German capital) from the East – Nazis couldn’t stop them

Hitler not wanting to share his fate commits suicide and his body burned afterwards – April 30, 1945 Nazi leaders announce the death of Hitler the next day saying he died a hero’s death leading his troops in battle May 8 th, 1945 – Germany formally surrenders ◦ VE Day (Victory in Europe Day)

August 6, 1945: Americans drop atomic bomb on the Japanese city of Hiroshima ◦ 60% of city destroyed ◦ 71 000 dead ◦ 68 000 injured Survivors developed fevers, burns, hair fell out, gums bled, skin rotted away September 2, 1945 – VJ Day: Victory over Japan Day
