Teacher: Kenji Tachibana Digital Photography I Case Study: Final project S tepping Into a Long Journey: It started with the self portrait ‘spEnv’ assignment. The WWII fort remnant looks far more interesting than the subject. That is also due to how Sam used counter diagonal elements in the scene to make the background come alive.

Teacher: Kenji Tachibana Digital Photography I Case Study: Final project N ext Stage: Moving forward Sam ‘ran’ with the feedback to make the subject bigger and to use a slow shutter speed to capture ‘motion blur’. Sam also studied the DAFA Artist Marcel Duchamp’s ‘Nude Descending a Staircase’. It was a break through study in motion that caused a scandal at the 1913 Armory Show in New York City.

Teacher: Kenji Tachibana Digital Photography I Case Study: Final project L ab Work: Basic & much more… The under exposure and the flat lighting resulted in a blah tonal range. The basic 3-step lab work ‘filter’ adjustments were applied to the image to ‘snap it up’. As per my suggestion, he also added a more focused face on top of the motion blurred to create a focal point.

Teacher: Kenji Tachibana Digital Photography I Case Study: Final project I mproving the Lighting: The processed image now has more snap and a focal point but it’s still feels some- what ‘flat’. I want more depth. I created an upside down ‘V’ lighting-shape Selection. The Selection was ‘inversed’ and Brightness/Contrast layer adjustment was applied to darken the sides. That ‘move’ helped to make the subject stand out from the background. Compare the side by side image. I recommend using the squint-view technique…

Teacher: Kenji Tachibana Digital Photography I Case Study: Final project F inal Touch: More color Besides depth, I like color. The previous improvement added depth but not color. It still looks almost monochromatic. Except for the skin color, the image is predominantly blue and blue/green. My final image adjustment was to introduce more color into the subject. Compare the two image and see for yourself. You probably don’t even have to use the squint-view technique…

Teacher: Kenji Tachibana Digital Photography I Case Study: Final project From: Here to there… Sam traveled far to get from the starting-point image on the left to the final-stage image on the right. It went from the Staged to a MADE photograph worthy of exhibiting.
