A Mouse with Gratitude Adapted from Aesop's Fables by Li, Chun-Fang Illustrated by Huang, Zhu and Lin, Zheng-Wei Translated by Hu, Mei-Ying
3
In the forest, there was a skinny little mouse named Sharpteeth. He always thought that he was so small that no one would care about a little one like him. Therefore, he only dared to run in the dark.
4
One day, when William, the lion king, patrolled his kingdom, he saw Ben, the cruel fox, fooling with Sharpteeth with his paws, intending to kill Sharpteeth.
5
William roared, “Don’t bully him! Let him go!” Ben was frightened. So he let Sharpteeth free.
6
“I will pay you back,” Sharpteeth said to the lion king gratefully. William sniffed, “Ha! A weak little mouse! You cannot save yourself, let alone paying me back.”
7
Ben, a cunning fox, kept searching for the right time to revenge. One day, Ben saw hunters setting traps. He hurried to William and persuaded him to destroy the traps. While the lion king was busy destroying a trap, Ben pushed him into the trap.
8
William was trapped by a net. He could not move at all. He could only roar and roar.
9
On hearing William’s roar, Sharpteeth hurried to the lion king. He cautiously gnawed a hole and he set the lion king free. So they became close friends.
10
Afraid of being revenged, Ben hurried to run away. Accidentally, he fell into another trap.
11
Ben was caught by the hunters. His skin was made into a beautiful scarf. Up to now, no one knows which country the scarf was sold to.
