3 The Shift from Family Life to Individual Life in the Bedroom 1950s: the dominant media was broadcast (radio/TV) –Family life in the living room –Communal 2000 on: new media dominate –Individual life in the bedroom –Bedroom culture: “practices closely associated with identity, privacy and the self have become linked to the domestic space of the child’s bedroom”

7 Convenience The bedroom is a safe place to store valued, collected objects (frequently media related) Parents rationalize these collections as having educational value Consumerism: “Through these collections, through their emerging fandoms, and through the associated theming of wallpaper, bed linen, decoration, etc., children’s identities are being constructed and, simultaneously, comodified”

8 Escape The decision is not so much a desire to be isolated from the family but WHEN to be a part of the family and WHEN to be by oneself –“living together separately” Children make choices about how to use different media; they prefer isolation at that time and show irritation if interrupted

9 Identity Growing independence from family –Self-sufficient –Control –Self-definition “who they are or want to be” Connection with peer groups –Face-to-face in the bedroom –With new media
