Convenience The bedroom is a safe place to store valued, collected objects (frequently media related) Parents rationalize these collections as having educational value Consumerism: “Through these collections, through their emerging fandoms, and through the associated theming of wallpaper, bed linen, decoration, etc., children’s identities are being constructed and, simultaneously, comodified”

Escape The decision is not so much a desire to be isolated from the family but WHEN to be a part of the family and WHEN to be by oneself –“living together separately” Children make choices about how to use different media; they prefer isolation at that time and show irritation if interrupted

Identity Growing independence from family –Self-sufficient –Control –Self-definition “who they are or want to be” Connection with peer groups –Face-to-face in the bedroom –With new media
