WHAT IS AN ADVERB? Adverbs describe/modify verbs. EXAMPLES: Jose was quietly going out the door. Glendale was torn down slowly. Tony spoke slowly. Katie jumped high.

Examples of adverbs and what they do: David spoke extremely grumpy. Extremely describes how grumpy David was. The runner easily finished first. Easily describes how the runner finished the race. Jose, my oldest brother, drove slowly to his girlfriend’s house. Slowly describes how my brother drove the car.

WHAT IS AN ADJECTIVE? An adjective is a word that describes/modifies a noun or pronoun EXAMPLES: A big, red ball The cute, huggable puppy The tall, green tree His huge, sharp teeth

Examples of adjectives and the nouns/pronouns they modify. She wore a yellow sweater to the picnic. adjective noun My bedroom was messy. noun adjective She lost her blue and white parka. adjective adjective noun Yellow describes the sweater. Messy describes the bedroom. Blue and white describe the color of the parka

Adjectives Words used to _________ (describe) a ______or _________. Can come right before or right after the noun it is modifying.(to be) Ex. A heavy rainstorm caused traffic delays. The rainstorm was heavy. Most adjectives are common, but the names or group of people are _______ Adjectives because they both describe a group that a person belongs to and they are a specific group (Americans, Chinese, Atlantans, Irish, etc)

Special Spelling Rules Most ad______ can become adverbs by just adding l_ If the adjective ends in a silent e, drop the e and add ly If the adjective ends in a ________ and y, change the y to i and add ly. Near=nearly, gentle=gently, easy=easily

Predicate Adjectives A predicate adjective is an adjective in the second part of the sentence (after the verb to be, look,seem appear,smell). Ex. A volcanic eruption is violent. The baby looks sick. The sandwich smells delicious. The bag is heavy. You look happy They seem busy It appears to be true

Comparatives & Superlatives as Adverbs or Adjectives The comparative will modify verbs that compare the actions of two items. earlier, farther The superlative will modify verbs that compare the actions of three or more items. earliest, farthest

Comparative adjectives or adverbs One-syllable adjectives normally have comparatives ending in -er: Old - older cheap - cheaper Two syllable adjectives ending in _y after a consonant in –er Heavy. Heavier Easy. Easier

Longer adjectives Adjectives of three or more syllables have more: beautiful - more beautiful difficult - more difficult Two-syllable adjectives ending in -ing, -ed, ful, and -less: tired - more tired boring - more boring

Change the sentences using superlatives She`s very kind. - Yes, she`s the kindest person I know. It`s a very beautiful park. - He`s very polite. - This coat is very expensive. - She`s very tall. -

Superlative adjectives One syllable adjectives normally have ending -est: old - oldest cheap - cheapest

Irregular forms Adjective Comparative Superlative good better best bad worse worst ill worse far farther / farthest / further furthest old older / elder oldest /eldest
