1 Definition of Bullying Behavior (Physical, Verbal, Social, Cyber): 1. aggressive behavior meant to hurt, humiliate or harass another person. 2. repeatedly over time. 3. a relationship where there is a physical/social imbalance of power. Not All Conflict is Bullying! Teachers’ Role = to EDUCATE You are all skilled educators not Judge/Jury or Detectives… Use your strengths as educators and TEACH appropriate behaviors

2 1.Empower Bystanders and Victims Establish Clear & Specific Rules Against Bullying (Role Play situations class/online) Conduct Weekly Classroom Climate Meetings Encourage a School Wide Climate of Unity through School Wide Programs and Messages Frequent Parent Contact of: Victim= Encourage parents to: A) Normalize and accept their child's feelings. B) Share the “Online” experience with their child. C) Ask their child questions as if they don’t know what is going on. D) Emphasize “Defensive Driving”. Bully= label the behavior as bullying and encourage the parents to role play situations. Reporting Forms to Encourage Victims and Bystanders 2.Address and Challenge Gender Stereotypes and Anti-Gay Epithets Model an Atmosphere of Acceptance

3 1.Use the Bullying Intervention Card (B.I.C.) Remove the bully from the situation immediately. Speak with the Victim first once the bully and bully supporters are removed from the situation. 2.Treat the Victim as a Person in Crisis 1.Is this really Bullying? 2.Empathize avoid phrases like “I Understand” LISTEN=SILENT 3.Clarify the incident through reflection 4.Student’s point of view: No judgment 5.Brainstorm alternatives/available resources. “think for the student” 6.Procedural goals: time-limited & sensitive of student’s social network and barriers 7. Implement plan : evaluate the effectiveness 8.Follow-up  Terminate the established crisis relationship.

6 Teachers’ Role = to EDUCATE “The manner in which you represent yourself online should reflect who you are now and who you want to be in the future.” – Most control over cyber security remains at home: EDUCATE the parents: Follow suggested guidelines of website Review with their child – Never give out personal information : i.e. passwords – Do not reply, forward, or send negative cyber messages Google their child Supervise their child’s time online – Computer in Family room or central location. – Store all electronic gadgets in parents’ bedroom before bed. Know the law Keep a detailed record of the event Share the Online Experience: Parents, be their Facebook Friend
