1 WWI Vocabulary and The Trench System Group 5: Gabby, Josie, Jenny, Dante, Victoria, and Paul

2 Just a lil’ vocab first! Queue- a file or line, especially of people waiting their turn Billet- Lodging for a soldier, student, etc. as in a private home or nonmilitary public building Pettifogging- dishonest or unethical in insignificant matters Barrack- A building or group of buildings for lodging soldiers, especially in garrison

3 Just a lil’ more vocab Latrine- a toilet or something used as a toilet, as a trench in the earth in a camp, or bivouac area. Esprit De Corps- A sense of unity and of common interests and responsibilities, as developed among a group of persons closely associated in a task, cause, or enterprise Gangrene- Necrosis or death of soft tissue due to obstructed circulation, usually followed by decomposition and putrefaction Tommy- Slang for bread Munitions- Usually materials used in war, especially weapons and ammunition

4 How ‘bout lil’ more Aspirant- An person who aspires, one who seeks or desires a career. Lorry- A motor truck Barrage- An heavy barrier of artillery fire to protect one’s own advancing or retreating troops or to stop the advance of enemy troops. Battery- Two or more pieces of artillery used for combined action. Quartermaster- An officer charged with providing quarters, clothing, fuel, or transportation. Chlorine Gas- An gas that causes acute damage in the upper and lower respiratory tract. First used as a weapon at Ypres, France, in 1915.
