Rescue Muni’s 3-Phased Plan For Geary Corridor Rapid Transit Presented by Dan Krause, Andrew Sullivan & David Vasquez

Geary Rapid Transit in 3 Phases Introduction Phase 1 – Inner Geary Transit Preferential Streets (TPS) Phase 2 – “Rail-Ready” Bus Rapid Transit and Transit Preferential Streets Extension Phase 3 – Convert Entire Corridor to Light-Rail

Why This Plan? Current Transit Service is woefully inadequate. Geary is one of the most heavily used transit corridors in the country. Phasing Allows for Improvements in the Short- Term for Suffering Riders Upgrade to Rail will have numerous positive effects to San Francisco’s entire transit network. It will stimulate upgrades to the urban design for the Geary Corridor.

Geary Rapid Transit – Phase 1 Inner Geary Transit Preferential Streets Elements: 1. Widening of Bus Lanes. 2. Add Bulb Outs at Bus Stops. 3. Elimination of one Auto Lane on O’Farrell & Geary. 4. Some Bus Stop Consolidations. 5. Right-Turn Pocket Lanes.

Geary Rapid Transit – Phase 1 Inner Geary Transit Preferential Streets Summary of Benefits: 1. Speed Service – Faster Boarding & Less Stops. 2. Increase Reliability – Getting Cars Out of the Transit Lane with Turn Pockets.

Geary Rapid Transit Plan Phase 2 “Rail-Ready” BRT (33 rd Ave. to Collins) and Extension of TPS (Gough to Masonic) Elements: 1.Bus Rapid Transit (BRT) - Exclusive transit lanes in the center of Geary Blvd. from 33rd Ave. to Collins. 2.BRT stations with side platforms and planted median. 3.A Rail-Ready Design for BRT - Lay tracks now and design stations for rail. 4.Transit Preferential Streets – Extend right-side bus lanes from Gough to Masonic. 5.Use Local and Regional Money Only Allowing an Acceleration of Construction Schedule.

Geary Rapid Transit Plan Phase 2 “Rail-Ready” BRT (33 rd Ave. to Collins) and Extension of TPS (Gough to Masonic) Exclusive Transit Lanes for BRT with Rails (33 rd Ave. to Collins)

Geary Rapid Transit Plan Phase 2 “Rail-Ready” BRT (33 rd Ave. to Collins) and Extension of TPS (Gough to Masonic) Summary of Benefits: 1. Reliability and Speed of Bus Service will Increase with Exclusive Transit Lanes. 2. Rail-Ready Design Allows for Rail Upgrade without Tearing Up Geary Again. 3. Will Add Capacity while Reducing Operating Costs. 4. Local and Regional Funding Focus Allows for Fast Implementation.

Estimated Costs: Phase 2 (Rail Ready BRT & TPS Extension) $200M – Construction of 2.6 miles of exclusive transit lanes, including tracks and stations from Collins to 33rd Ave. $5M – TPS Extension (Bus Lanes from Gough to Masonic) TOTAL ESTIMATED COST FOR GEARY RAIL-READY BRT - $205M

Rescue Muni’s Funding Plan: Phase 2 (Rail Ready BRT & TPS Extension) $50M – Proposition K $110M – Capital Transit Bond #1 $45M – Regional and State Sources TOTAL REVENUE PRODUCED BY RESCUE MUNI PLAN - $205M

Geary Rapid Transit Plan Phase 3 Convert Entire Corridor to Light Rail Elements: 1.Construct Subway Tunnel from Geary/Laguna to Post/Montgomery. 2.Shift Alignment of Downtown Subway Tunnel to Post St. 3.Build totally grade separated transit lanes from Laguna to Collins. Fillmore Trench Extensions under Webster and Steiner.Fillmore Trench Extensions under Webster and Steiner. Short Viaduct over Scott and Divisadero.Short Viaduct over Scott and Divisadero. 4.Take over Masonic Hill Auto Tunnel for Rail. 5.Construct Grade Separation at Park Presidio. 6.Extend exclusive transit right-of-way West from 33 rd to end of Geary.
