Rescue Muni’s 3-Phased Plan For Geary Corridor Rapid Transit Presented by Dan Krause, Andrew Sullivan & David Vasquez
2
Geary Rapid Transit in 3 Phases Introduction Phase 1 – Inner Geary Transit Preferential Streets (TPS) Phase 2 – “Rail-Ready” Bus Rapid Transit and Transit Preferential Streets Extension Phase 3 – Convert Entire Corridor to Light-Rail
3
Why This Plan? Current Transit Service is woefully inadequate. Geary is one of the most heavily used transit corridors in the country. Phasing Allows for Improvements in the Short- Term for Suffering Riders Upgrade to Rail will have numerous positive effects to San Francisco’s entire transit network. It will stimulate upgrades to the urban design for the Geary Corridor.
4
Geary Rapid Transit – Phase 1 Inner Geary Transit Preferential Streets Elements: 1. Widening of Bus Lanes. 2. Add Bulb Outs at Bus Stops. 3. Elimination of one Auto Lane on O’Farrell & Geary. 4. Some Bus Stop Consolidations. 5. Right-Turn Pocket Lanes.
5
Geary Rapid Transit – Phase 1 Inner Geary Transit Preferential Streets Summary of Benefits: 1. Speed Service – Faster Boarding & Less Stops. 2. Increase Reliability – Getting Cars Out of the Transit Lane with Turn Pockets.
6
Geary Rapid Transit Plan Phase 2 “Rail-Ready” BRT (33 rd Ave. to Collins) and Extension of TPS (Gough to Masonic) Elements: 1.Bus Rapid Transit (BRT) - Exclusive transit lanes in the center of Geary Blvd. from 33rd Ave. to Collins. 2.BRT stations with side platforms and planted median. 3.A Rail-Ready Design for BRT - Lay tracks now and design stations for rail. 4.Transit Preferential Streets – Extend right-side bus lanes from Gough to Masonic. 5.Use Local and Regional Money Only Allowing an Acceleration of Construction Schedule.
