Underground Pipe Modeling INPUT into TRIFLEX ® or How do I know that my Pipe is Underground? TRIFLEX® WINDOWS PipingSolutions, Inc. 23 June 2004 1

Begin to build your Piping Model within TRIFLEX ®. TRIFLEX® WINDOWS PipingSolutions, Inc. 23 June 2004 2

Note how there are NO “ Whiskers ” or “ Heat Exchanger ” marks on the pipe to indicate that it is Underground. TRIFLEX® WINDOWS PipingSolutions, Inc. 23 June 2004 3

Go to Setup, Case Definition to see that you have forgotten to check the “ Soil Interaction ” box. TRIFLEX® WINDOWS PipingSolutions, Inc. 23 June 2004 4

Checking Soil Interaction will then show the “ Whiskers ” or “ Heat Exchanger ” marks on the piping model. See Next slide. TRIFLEX® WINDOWS PipingSolutions, Inc. 23 June 2004 5

Checking Soil Interaction will then show the “ Whiskers ” or “ Heat Exchanger ” marks on the piping model TRIFLEX® WINDOWS PipingSolutions, Inc. 23 June 2004 6 Note the “ Whiskers ” or “ Heat Exchanger ” marks on the piping model. Therefore the pipe is Underground up to Node Point 50.

Checking the full Piping Model we see the pipe is underground until Node Point 50. And we see the smaller 10 inch pipe underground at Node point 125. TRIFLEX® WINDOWS PipingSolutions, Inc. 23 June 2004 7

But what about the Vertical Supports shown on the Underground Piping. How do you Model that? TRIFLEX® WINDOWS PipingSolutions, Inc. 23 June 2004 8

The Vertical Support is in the Center of Two elements. These two elements have the Soil Tabs turned OFF (or None). While the rest of the Underground Piping Model has the Soil Tabs turned ON. TRIFLEX® WINDOWS PipingSolutions, Inc. 23 June 2004 9 Note that it says NONE.

The Vertical Support is in the Center of Two elements. These two elements have the Soil Tabs turned OFF. While the rest of the Underground Piping Model has the Soil Tabs turned ON (or selected a soil approach). TRIFLEX® WINDOWS PipingSolutions, Inc. 23 June 2004 10 Note I have selected the ASME B31.1 approach. For the differences in Soil Modeling approaches. Contact PipingSolutions, Inc. 11 The Vertical Support is in the Center of Two elements. These two elements have the Soil Tabs turned OFF. While the rest of the Underground Piping Model has the Soil Tabs turned ON (or selected a soil approach). TRIFLEX® WINDOWS PipingSolutions, Inc. 23 June 2004 11 Note I have selected the User Defined approach. For the differences in Soil Modeling approaches. Contact PipingSolutions, Inc. 12 But what about this SOILS TAB. And how do I use it? TRIFLEX® WINDOWS PipingSolutions, Inc. 23 June 2004 12 Start with the depth of the Pipe. Here 3 ft. of cover, or 54” from grade to the centerline of the 36” pipe. Grade

Pick the Soils tab, then select the B31.1 approach. TRIFLEX® WINDOWS PipingSolutions, Inc. 23 June 2004 13 Depth to centerline Density of Soil Horizontal stiffness factor. This is the compaction of the Soil. Backfill with Dry Sand Trench width is one pipe dia. plus 24”. Or 60” Axial Friction Coeff. The Load Coeff. Here is zero. Or N/A since the pipe is less than 3 pipe diameters below the soil. If the pipe was 3 pipe diameters or greater then a value for the load coeff. Would be put in automatically by TRIFLEX.

But what actual values are used for soil? TRIFLEX® WINDOWS PipingSolutions, Inc. 23 June 2004 14 The eight values shown are the values that TRIFLEX uses for the Soil.
