CONTEXT First Year to Second Year persistence rate approximately 50% Key BENCHMARKS of completing 20 degree applicable units RP Group – Student Support (re)defined (2013) Directed: Students have a goal and know how to achieve it Focused: Students stay on track— keeping their eyes on the prize Nurtured: Students feel somebody wants them to succeed as a student and helps them succeed Connected: Students feel they are part of the college community Engaged: Students actively listen and participate in class and are involved in extracurricular activities Valued: Students’ skills, talents, abilities and experiences are recognized; they have opportunities to contribute on campus and feel their contributions are appreciated Student Success Act of 2012 – mandatory matriculation requirements Orientation, Assessment and Educational Planning

FIRST YEAR EXPERIENCE COUNSELING CENTER ServiceWhenWhat is Offered Drop-In Counseling (In-person only) During all open hours (10-15 minutes) Prerequisite Clearance Answers to Quick Questions or Concerns General Counseling Appointments (Appointments can be made in-person or by calling the FYE Counseling Center) Monday – Friday 8am – 4pm (30 minutes) Comprehensive Education Planning Transcript Evaluations In-depth discussion of degree or transfer requirements Career Counseling Appointments (Appointments can be made in-person or by calling the FYE Counseling Center) Tuesdays & Wednesdays 8am – 3pm (30 minutes) Career Exploration Major Selection Assistance Answers to Questions About Career/Major Major Exploration Workshop (Appointments can be made in-person or by calling the FYE Counseling Center) Wednesdays 3pm (1 hour) Get resources for exploring possible careers and majors Learn how to make a successful major decision

SUMMER BRIDGE & GO DAYS Summer Bridge Combines PD 40 & English 21 or 28 Geared to students coming directly out of high school (approx. 500 students) This year will be adding peer mentors and programming activities GO Days New Student Conference held the week prior to the start of classes All New Students are invited to attend Includes workshops on a variety of topics, major exploration, educational planning and networking All students get a t-shirt and some goodies State Academic Senate Exemplary Program Award

FRESHMAN ACADEMY One year fully-cohorted program Targeted to Summer Bridge English 21 students Beginning with 1 Social and Behavioral Cohort – will expand to include Arts & Humanities, Business, STEM Will allow students to complete transferable English & Math in addition to 12 transferable GEs Supported with Counseling, Peer Mentors and anchor class Will coordinate with Town Hall and other campus enrichment activities

PEER2PEER MENTORS Mentors to be recruited in Spring 2015 Summer Bridge, Gatekeeper Classes, Freshman Academy, Veterans, Foster Youth, DSPS, STEM, General First Year Students Asking all faculty to help with mentor recruitment
