7 ‘Spacing’ and the Mini-Curl ‘Mirrored’ are ‘cousins’ in the sense that they both evolve from the Flat-Curl family. They both offer something unique in that they speed up the timing of the Flat- Curl concept and present a different challenge for defenses! ‘Spacing’ is a 3 x 1 idea whose thought process begins with trying to get a one-on-one weakside, and is thus the ‘Choice route’ of the Quick game! To the frontside, it is a triangle read that uses an Arrow, Mini-Curl, and a sit to create a 3-on-2 with good ‘SPACING.’ The under coverage cannot get help to the weakside receiver and still have enough underneath defenders left to break on the three frontside ‘spacers’! “Mirror” is designed to isolate the flat defender and close the deal before he can get help from the CB or from the next inside LB! Its rhythm, in effect, eliminates the ‘danger’ player! It is a 2 x 2 idea! KEYS to a successful play: Splits on the Mini-Curl! They are DIFFERENT than normal Curl for a REASON! SPACING by the three receivers in ‘Spacing.’ Get good width on releases! Don’t let one LB cover two guys! 9 FS/OUTS INS: ARROW. Split 1/2way +1. Goal is to attract flat defender’s attention and get him to run with you; technique is a bit different than basic Curl in that you are emphasizing WIDTH more than DEPTH. Take one 45º step, then accelerate almost flat to the sideline, snapping your head around on your 3rd step out of the break without slowing down. Can turn up once 5 yds from the sidelines if you don’t have the ball and there’s no Quick Corner in the deep ‘sandbox.’ QB: Pre-read side with widest flat player/furthest danger player. 3-step pop-up, move the flat defender onto the Arrow with your eyes and shoulders, reset hips and hit Quick Curl in the window when he leaves. If he backs straight up, anchor step and hit the Arrow quickly. Vs. Pressed CB, check out or check ‘Fire.’ I O O I FS OUTS: MINI CURL. You want to get the feeling of running a semi-circle around the flat defender and getting into the window inside him before he can react. For that reason, cut your split to Top #s (Hash +1). Use same components of Curl route, just shorter: Sprint to 4-5, Speed break to 7, Drumroll redirect back to QB at 7 after burst/lunge. Take an angle that gets you INSIDE the flat defender, INTO the window, then come back THROUGH it. Ball should be waiting on you. Make a 180º spin after catch, split the zone North & South. V IfIf he backs up/walls, hit Arrow off anchor 1 step, get FAST width, take flat defender OUT! SPRINT to 4-5! Speed break to 7: Get inside flat defender 7 91- 191 Inst ruct ion al Top #s (Hash +1) 1/2way +1 3-step3-step drop, eyeball/shoulder turn flat defender onto Arrow, throw Qk Curl in the hole off your pop-up step. 10 FS/OUTS INS: ARROW. Split OT +3. Can turn up once 5 yds from the sidelines. QB: PSL for a clean ‘Individual’ if you have a BS single. 3-step drop, FS is a true ‘key defender’ read off OLB. If he backs up, anchor step to Arrow route; if he opens his shoulders at all and/or overflanks pre-snap, hit the Mini-Curl off a pop-up step. Sit route is Outlet, can also be ‘Q’ in Hot or Warm protection, can be your first look v. an empty LB box. 2 nd LB is ‘danger.’ I O FS OUTS: QUICK CURL. Align 2 yards outside M, run Mini-Curl with a slightly widened stem to create ‘spacing.’ You want to burst beyond the flat defender as fast as you can to get out of his sight line, then run the top of your curl in such a way that you feel yourself ‘running around’ him. Speed break at 4-5 yards to a thin Slant angle, drop hips & accelerate back through the hole at 7, present your numbers to QB. Any sliding must be done after numbers are presented and OUTSIDE, not inside! V Spacing Spacing Sit is your eye contact outlet 1 step, get FAST width, take flat defender OUT! FS MID: SPACING SIT. Goal is to hold 2 nd short defender and stay open if he flies past you. Take a preferred inside release, aim for a spot 6-7 yards deep 2 yards beyond his far shoulder to help create ‘spacing.’ Sit & face QB. If you feel the defender leave, you can slide as far inside as the next LB inside allows or just SLIGHTLY outside if you feel inside-out pressure. M Sit past far leg of 2 nd LB. Face QB, give him eyes if available SPRINT to 4-5! Speed break to 7: Get inside flat defender 7 91- 19 1 In str uc tio na l OT +3 3-step 3-step drop, read shoulders of flat defender V 6 O C BS OUTS: INDIVIDUAL. Normal 80-90 rules…Quick Out with the option to ask for something different based on CB I BS INS: SIT. Normal 80-90 BS rules. Work yourself open 4-5 yds deep over the ball. 11 “JUKE” C *If the CB is 8 yards off or more, the best adjustment is to ask for a “Juke” route. 1. Adjust your split to Middle #s / Hash +2 2. Take one step forward and simply pivot in place, facing the QB. Catch, spin, attack CB’s outside shoulder, guarantee a 5-yard gain, ‘Juke’ for more once you’ve done that! V“SLANT” *If the CB is head-up to Outside and tight enough to cause problems for the Qk Out (generally 6 yds or less), “Slant” is the best choice. “FADE STOP” C “HORN” 3 – S T E P B A C K S I D E O U T S I D E: “Individual” 8 yds + ## ≥6 yds C 1. Adjust split to Bot #s / Hash +4 ## 2. Release to ‘threaten his leverage’—hard at his outside shldr, get him to turn his hips or freeze! Keep at least 2 yds separation—the closer he is, the smaller the steps! 3. Break the 1 st time your outside foot hits past 4 yds. Drive outs foot into ground, give a hard nod. 4. Think skinny angle out of break, find LB inside you…the wider he is, the skinnier you are. Be prepared for QB to stop you with a low ball! 4+ *If the CB is pressed head-up to inside and you believe he reacts quickly ‘over the top,’ “Fade Stop” is a great choice! 1. Adjust split to Top #s / Hash +1 ## 2. RUN A FADE. Quick foot fire right at the CB, outside release, straighten, accelerate. 3. At 8 yards, or a yard past the Goalline—whichever comes first— look over your inside shoulder, BEHIND you. Ball will be on its way, thrown on a line at the back of your helmet. Throw your inside arm through so you can adjust to the ball and stick it with both hands extended. Approx 8 *If the CB is pressed head-up to inside and you believe he bites on 1 st moves and doesn’t recover well, make him pay deep by asking for “Horn,” as long as no immediate safety help exists! C 1. Adjust split to Top #s / Hash +1 ## 2. RUN A QUICK OUT. Get right into the route, show eyes & hands to QB without losing speed as you roll out of your break, do not lose speed! Eyes & hands to QB Eyes & hands to QB Maintain speed! Maintain speed! 3. Turn up at full speed. ATTACK the HANDS of the CB as you go by him on the outside. SQUEEZE him inside, make him turn his hips. Be prepared to FADE to the ball, but only after it’s in the air! < Attack C’s hands! < Squeeze/straighten! - C L I C K H E R E T O R E T U R N T O D I R E C T O R Y - C L I C K H E R E T O R E T U R N T O D I R E C T O R Y -TRUSTTEMPODISCIPLINEPREPARATION SHARED RESPONSIBILITY
