LV STEM workshop Gearing up for 2008-2009 Glenn D. Blank Computer Science and Engineering www.cse.lehigh.edu/~glennb Support from NSF (Grants No. EIA-0638664 and 0624553) and Pennsylvania Infrastructure Technology Alliance

Pressing on toward the goals 1) Novel curricula will be disseminated regionally and nationally 2) Outreach students broaden impact of Graduate Fellows 3) In-service / pre-service training 4) Corporate partners Overarching theme: Communicating complex concepts of STEM

Novel curricula Develop classroom test more novel curricula and lesson plans this year A math or science coordinator should review them for standards Fellows upload novel curricula & lesson plans to lvstem.cse.lehigh.edu (aka www.lehigh.edu/stem)lvstem.cse.lehigh.eduwww.lehigh.edu/stem Fellows attending conferences should upload their conference papers Teacher conferences? Other ideas?

Outreach students Formerly called Outreach Experiences for Graduates (OEGs) PITA funding can support either undergrads or grads on an hourly basis Learn a curriculum alongside a Fellow until he/she is ready to go to another school to help a teacher implement the curriculum Teams will recruit and train their students and let Priyani know for payroll, etc.

In-service/pre-service training Flash workshop at Liberty High School  An LVCSTA (Lehigh Valley Computer Science Teachers Association) event  Wednesdays 3:30-5pm for five or six weeks starting September 10 th ? Other in-service training ideas?  Need to get principal onboard, etc. Pre-service assignments with College of Education students in the works  Also talk to your principal

Corporate partners Air Products at HMMS & Allen HS PPL at Allen HS & Raub MS? Crayola (formerly Binney & Smith) at Freedom? Butz construction at Broughal MS? Other ideas?

Resources to widen the pipeline Interactive multimedia introduces breadth of computer science, plus classes in UML and Java to novices www.cse.lehigh.edu/~cimel/prototype.html www.cse.lehigh.edu/~cimel/prototype.html Design-First with Java curriculum www.lehigh.edu/stem/teams/dieruff www.lehigh.edu/stem/teams/dieruff DesignFirst intelligent tutoring system designfirst.cse.lehigh.edu

Theme: Communicating complex concepts of STEM Team charters  Teams refine them over next two weeks  Fellows upload to the web site  Share them with principals and parents? Communicating graduate research to K-12 students  Thanks, Melissa and Ray!  Who is next? Other ideas?

How can we work together to widen the pipeline in our schools? Discussion?
