1 STORAGE AND DISPOSAL OF MEDICAL SUPPLIES Specific for Students with Diabetes KBN 2014

2 STORAGE OF MEDICAL SUPPLIES O Parents/Guardians are responsible for providing the needed supplies for their child O Specific supplies needed are based on the DMMP (Diabetes Medical Management Plan) O The supplies must be readily accessible to the student at all times KBN 2014

3 Medical Supplies O Examples of needed medical supplies: Glucometer & glucometer supplies Alcohol prep pads Ketone strips Insulin ( may be in form of vial/syringe, insulin pen, or insulin pump) Pen – Extra insulin pen, pen needles, cartridges as necessary Insulin vial – additional vial, syringes/ needles Disposable gloves KBN 2014

4 Medical Supplies ( cont. ) Pump – additional insulin, tubing, insertion needle, batteries, other Glucagon ALWAYS CHECK EXPIRATION DATES ON SUPPLIES. NOTIFY PARENT/GUARDIAN OF ANY EXPIRED OR DEPLETED SUPPLIES IMMEDIATELY! KBN 2014

5 Food Supplies O Foods for treating low blood sugar are considered part of the supplies that any student with Diabetes should have available O The additional foods should be available in places such as: The student’s diabetes kit, backpack, classroom, bus (if transported), and the health office at all times O Parent/Guardian should provide the food supplies for the student. KBN 2014

6 Food Supplies Remember The additional foods must be available to the student with diabetes at all times throughout the school day and any extra-curricular activities. KBN 2014

7 Storage of Supplies O Additional insulin that is unopened should be refrigerated O Additional supplies may be kept in the health office or the classroom KBN 2014

8 Disposal of Supplies O Used sharps (needles, lancets, syringes, insulin pens, vials, etc…) should be discarded into a sharp’s container O Parent/Guardian should be notified before supplies have expired KBN 2014
