HOW TO USE TWO VERBS IN A SENTENCE VERBOS DOBLES

There are 4 ways to make sentences that use multiple verbs. We will mostly be using three of them 1. conjugated verb followed by infinitive verb. 2. tener (conj.) + que + infinitive verb 3. Ir (conj.) + a + infinitive. Sentences using dependent and independent clauses

WHAT’S AN INFINITIVE? Conjugated verb Conjugated verbs combine a person with an action. Yo como = I eat Tú vas = you go Estudiamos = we study Infinitive verb An action all by itself. An unconjugated verb. A verb at it’s starting point. Always ends with either –ar, -er, -ir. Comer = to eat Ir = to go Estudiar =to study

VERBOS DOBLES CONJUGATED VERB + INFINITIVE VERB. Necesito comer la cena. I need to eat diner. Debes hacer la tarea. You ought to do the homework. Preferimos correr a la escuela We prefer to run to school

PAUSA Discuss with a partner 3 important details we have learned so far. Come up with a question for each of the details to write in your notes.

TENER + QUE + INFINITIVE. Used to express obligation or need to do something Tener is conjugated. Tengo que estudiar = I have to study. ¿Qué tienes que hacer? = what do you have to do? Ella tiene que prestar atención. = she has to pay attention. ¡Tenemos que bailar! = we have to dance! *note there is no stem-change in nosotros

IR + A + INFINITIVE Used to express actions in the immediate future. Used to express what is “going to happen” Voy a comprar un libro = I’m going to buy a book Vamos a nadar en la piscina. = We are going to swim in the pool. Ellos van a mirar una película. = they are going to watch a movie. *note the ‘a’ doesn’t show up in the English translation, but it is necessary in Spanish

DEPENDENT/INDEPENDENT CLAUSES You can use two conjugated verbs in a sentence, but they must be used in dependent and independent clauses. Cuando voy a mi casa yo hablo con mi hermano. When I go to my house I speak with my brother. Cuando voy a mi casa = dependent clause Yo hablo con mi hermano = independent clause Cuando mi amiga habla, yo escucho. When my friend speaks, I listen. *note that the subject does not have to be the same when conjugating verbs for dependent and independent clauses.
