The Berlin Goddess By Arthur Cross

General INFORMATION Date- 570-560 BC Height- 1.93 m with plinth 1.83 m without Period- Archaic Region Found- Attica Style- free standing statue: kore Material- Attican marble ( happy Andrew? )

Back ground information The Berlin Goddess was discovered in Attica and was thought to stood in a burial plot. It was found buried and protected in a lead covering in Keratea. This may have been due to the fact that an invasion was immanent (from the Persians perhaps) or because the family who's burial plot it stood over was not in favour with the people at the time.

Who is the Berlin Goddess As per usual the statue holds an object, in this case a pomegranate. This is due to the fact that when holding something your hand is not as creased making it easier for the sculptor to create a realistic image. A pomegranate is a fruit which can be related to fertility. Also it can be related to death as persephone ate a pomegranate meaning she had to stay in the underworld with hades for certain periods of time. Due to the relationship between this particular fruit and persephone we could conclude that this statue could be the goddess herself. This would also make sense due to the fact that she wears a polos which is a hat worn by goddess’.

Kore Basic features that you need to know.. Large eyes Feet together Use of geometry Archaic smile Disproportionate

Close Analysis YAY

Wears an epiblema, (rectangular shawl) over a peplos. Evenly spaced creases can be seen which are quite artistic compared to the Nikandre Kores lack of detail. However they are even and uninteresting. Clothes..

Front The hands are placed across the body. The right hand holds a pomegranate and the left holds the epiblemos. This hand positioning cuts the parallel creases of the peplos and epiblemos creating interest.

The contrast between the folds of the epiblemos and that of the peplos adds interest as seen in the image to the right. Bridges can be see from this angle connecting the arms (elbow up) to the torso. This adds support meaning they are less likely to fall off. The back…

Going lower.. Large unrealistic feet High soled sandals worn Realistic draping of peplos over the feet Feet together in typical kore form. This was due to the fact that women where thought to just stay at home. Also due to the fact that more creases would occur meaning more work for the artist.

Jewellery As you can see the Berlin Goddess has a lot of jewelry indicating wealth and status A necklace Matching earrings A spiral bracelet on her left wrist.

Polos decorated with Lotus buds and intricate etched patterns Earrings unlike in some statues are not made of bronze or other metals but are carved marble (tricky stuff!) The necklace also adds a bit of support to the neck
