2 Religion in Egyptian Life Religion was an important part of daily life Egyptians believed that the gods controlled nature To avoid droughts and floods, Egyptians tried to please their gods Each part of Egypt had their own gods and goddesses with their own temples

3 Egypt’s Major Gods Osiris was the god of the living and the dead Amon-Re protected the rich and the poor Amon-Re was born each morning in the east and died in the west The west was believed to be the home of the dead Egyptians believed that dead spirits lingered on the west side of the Nile

4 Osiris and the Family Osiris, the god of the afterlife had a wife named Isis His son was Horus, the god of the sky Isis was the mother who protected the health of all children

5 Life in the Afterlife Spirits made their way to the afterlife in heavenly boats If their life was lived correctly, they joined with Osiris and lived a life of pleasure They spent their days with their family members who have died before them

6 Egyptian Burial The dead were buried with food, clothing and valued possessions Bodies had to be made into mummies for the spirit to live in the afterlife

7 Tombs for the Pharaohs In the beginning tombs were made of mud brick The pharaohs of the Fourth Dynasty built the largest tombs of all called pyramids Most of the pyramids were built during the Old Kingdom It could take more than 20 years to build a pyramid
