Read a book of your choosing for fifteen minutes.
Reflection Question
If your book were made into a movie, would you change any parts? Explain what you would change and why.
If you wouldn’t change anything, explain why some directors choose to change the story when making a movie.

3. Rear Window Opening Montage
Activity 2.21 –
We will be analyzing seven still images from the first 30 minutes of Rear Window.
On your device, go to my web page locate and open the “Rear Window: Analyzing the Opening Segment” PowerPoint in the Rear Window Unit.
For each image, complete the chart on 2.21, Part I, by describing the scene and responding to the questions. Be prepared to share and discuss with the class!

4. Opening Montage – the Apartment
Use this image to model the analysis with the students. Explain to students that this image represents Jeff’s “world.” What can they learn about Jeff based on the image?

As we view the first 36 minutes of Rear Window, read the film techniques used in the scene and determine the effect the technique has on the scene.
You will have a few minutes after each scene to write your comments on the 2.21 part 2 chart.

Discuss the following questions in your group.
1) Who is constructing the story?
2) Do other character agree with that interpretation of events?
3) What do the audience/viewer know?
4) How does the audience become the “eyes” of the person looking through the lens?
5) What does the audience see and what potentially important elements does the viewer not see?
