2 Project Description To successfully design and manufacture an over-ride mechanism for the steering system on our SOAP Box Car. The over-ride mechanism will allow more thrill to the child and more safety to the experience if the professional driver needs to take over steering. If successful, we will have time to continue to modify other parts of the car and get a jump-start on future assignments that will allow the car to be almost fully complete for the race.

11 Over Ride Mechanism Goals Design an Over Ride Mechanism that allows the rear or safety driver to take control of the steering of the car Give the child the impression that he or she is in control of the car (note: whether he or she actually has control of the car or not) Be able to Prototype and test over ride mechanism

15 Mechanism Disengaging the Drive Being able to keep the child from having control of the car Mechanical Advantage Larger gear for steering in the front- child has less control Smaller gear in the rear- giving safety driver more control

16 Low Cost Material Used Needs to be economical- keep costs low Light weight Assembly Will it require extra knowledge? (welding, etc.) Will outside help be needed?
