Transportation Tuesday TRANSPORTATION TUESDAY REAR ENDERS – HOW CAN WE PREVENT THEM? A collision occurs when two vehicles occupy the same space!
2
Transportation Tuesday Some drivers may disagree but the fact remains… this can be prevented! MOVE ON TO THE NEXT SLIDES TO DISCOVER BASIC REAR-END PREVENTION !
3
Transportation Tuesday Drivers failed to follow the 2-second rule. Drivers braking hard causing sudden stops. Excessive speed for conditions. Again … INADEQUATE SPACE. While driving we often witness rear-end collisions. With so much space and wide roads, why does it still happen?
4
Transportation Tuesday General signs indicating a vehicle is going to be stopping! Traffic lights ahead. Vehicle slows down. Signal lights go on. Brake lights go on. Approaching Traffic from side roads or entry ramps. A vehicle cuts into the lane ahead. A car door opens ahead. Road construction. Pedestrians or animals approaching the street.
5
Transportation Tuesday Sound advice to avoid striking a vehicle in front of you: Keep the vehicle in control at all times. Travel speed appropriate for conditions Do not follow too closely. Remember the 2-second rule Anticipate sudden stops. Maintain distance to allow clear visibility. Allow additional stopping distance for wet, muddy, icy, or oily, road surfaces. Allow greater stopping distance in a larger vehicle. The small car in front of you may be able to stop quicker than your larger truck. Maintain regular vehicle maintenance schedule.

Transportation Tuesday Avoiding being struck from behind: Avoid Tailgaters by signaling them to pass, safely give way by pulling off the road, etc. Frequently glance in your rear view mirror, also when stopped at an intersection. Stop a car length short of intersections or crosswalks and keep your wheel straight to allow room to roll ahead if struck from behind. This could give you room for evasive action if required. Make sure brake lights and turn signals are working, and use them correctly. Avoid sudden stops. In emergency stopping situations flash your brake lights to warn drivers behind you. Avoid being a target by properly parking your vehicle.
7
Transportation Tuesday Take the surprise out of driving Be prepared for other vehicles to stop suddenly! Watch traffic all around you to prevent rear-end collisions ! Read the Road! “ Vehicle collision is a result of two vehicles occupying the same space”.
