3 The Three Cs Communication- The exchange of thoughts, ideas, and beliefs between two or more people. Compromise- The result of each person’s giving up something in order to reach a solution that satisfies everyone. Cooperation- Working together for the good of all.

4 Communication Verbal: Things you say – In your notes make two lists: Positive speaking skills (Allow others to talk) Negative speaking skills (Hogging the conversation) Nonverbal: Body language – In your notes make two lists: Positive body language (Smiling) Negative body language (Frowning)

5 Communication Active Listening: hearing, thinking about, and responding to the other persons message. – In your notes make a list of active listening skills: Pay attention Provide feedback Let the person finish speaking Stay calm if it is something you don’t want to hear

6 Communication Refusal skills: communication strategies that help you say no effectively. – Be honest – Be friendly and polite – Be firm – Make eye contact – Offer and alternative In your group come up with as many ways as you can think of to say no to someone who is trying to get you to try a cigarette.

7 Compromise In your notes come up with a situation where two people or groups of people want different things. – Example: John and Jake want to go to the movies but Josh and Jason want to go to bowling. With a partner share your situation and together develop a compromise for the two people or groups.

10 Friends and Family Kinds of families: Couple: Two adults and no children Nuclear: Two adults and one or more children Single Parent: One parent and one or more children. Parent may be unmarried, divorced, or widowed Extended: A nuclear or single parent family who also lives with other relatives Blended: One parent, one step parent, and the children of one or both of the parents

11 Friends and Family What are some problems that families have to deal with? – Separation and Divorce – Illness and Death – Unemployment – Substance Abuse – Physical and Emotional Abuse

12 Friends and Family Your ideal family In your notes describe what you want your family to look like when you are older. Where do you live? Who do you live with? What do the adults do for a living? If you have kids what are they like? – What are their interests? – What are their roles and responsibilities in the family What are the roles and responsibilities of the adults?

13 Friends and Family What are some qualities of good friends? – Loyalty – Reliability – Sympathy – Caring – Giving – Good listener

14 Friends and Family Peer Pressure: pressure from people your age to do something. – Positive Peer Pressure: When others your age pressure you to do something worthwhile Try out for a sports team Start exercising after school Volunteering after school – Negative Peer Pressure: When others your age pressure you to do things that aren’t worthwhile or good for you Try drugs or alcohol Trying dangerous or illegal activities Doing something that goes against your values
