When Gene feels like he is living for Finny, he is the most repressed. Through their doppleganger relationship, Knowles suggests that guilt causes deep dependence.

Through the boys of Devon's always shifting their perception of enlisting, Knowles displays how they are unready to enlist in the first place. The boys constantly waver on enlistment, just as Devon resists peace. Their dynamic stance on war and Devon as a symbol illustrate how people hold on to youth.
