Lab: A Breath of Fresh Air Tuesday, April 13, 2010 for 7A Thursday, April 15, 2010 for 7B

Before We Begin… What is the function of the respiratory system? What organs are involved and what are their functions? What is the difference between respiration and breathing?

Before We Begin -- Cont’d Describe the process of breathing (other than inhalation and exhalation!).

A Breath of Fresh Air In this lab, you will construct a model of the lungs using simple materials to demonstrate how breathing takes place.

Problem/Scientific Question What causes your body to inhale and exhale air?

Materials: What do these materials represent? Water bottle Small balloon Large balloon

Observations/Data Feel free to use a camera to take pictures of your project. If a camera is not available, you should illustrate your model. Remember to label what each part of your model represents AND include a description of its function.

Analysis In your analysis, explain how the materials you used were good choices in demonstrating how breathing takes place. If your model did not function properly, be prepared to give an explanation.

Analysis: Points to Address In your model, what is the position of the diaphragm just after you exhaled? What do the lungs look like just after you exhaled? In your model, how does the diaphragm move? How does the movement of the diaphragm affect the lungs? Does your model show that pressure changes are responsible for breathing? Explain.

Conclusion Did your hypothesis hold up? What did you learn? What could have been done differently to improve your results?

EXTRA CREDIT More to explore…  How could you improve on this model to more closely show what happens in the chest cavity during the process of breathing? Explain.  Would the materials be different? If so, what?  Would the procedures change? How?

One Final Word… Your typed lab report is due on Friday, April 16th for 7A and April 20 for 7B. The extra credit should be typed and stapled to your lab report.
