It is in your hospital cafeteria that these two worlds meet – and we will give you real suggestions for how to successfully marry these two environments by using inspired finish materials, color, textures and lighting. 2 A hospital should offer both physical and emotional healing through a warm and comforting aesthetic. The vibe of a restaurant is intentionally created to enhance the overall experience of dining and socializing within the space.

Red ◦ The most emotionally intense color ◦ Stimulates appetite ◦ Because of intensity most often used only as an accent ◦ Used for holidays centered around love (although pink is more accurate for this psychologically) White ◦ Symbolizes innocence and purity ◦ Used to project the absence of color, or neutrality ◦ Healthcare professionals wear white to imply sterility

Blue ◦ Instills feelings of calm & peacefulness ◦ Symbolizes loyalty ◦ Promotes productivity in business environment ◦ Has been shown to cause loss of appetite Green ◦ Symbolizes nature ◦ Current popularity due in part to our environmental concerns ◦ One of the easiest colors on the eye ◦ Often used for its calming effect

Yellow ◦ Sunny yellow is an Attention getter ◦ Enhances concentration in limited amounts ◦ can lead to irritation and loss of temper with prolonged exposure ◦ Increases metabolism Purple ◦ Symbolizes wealth, royalty & spirituality ◦ Known to promote restfulness & sleep ◦ since it is somewhat rare to find in nature it can appear exotic or artificial

Brown ◦ Evokes a sense of strength & reliability ◦ Symbolizes warmth, comfort & security ◦ Often described as natural & down-to-earth Orange ◦ Considered an energetic color ◦ Brings about feelings of excitement & enthusiasm ◦ Can cause intense irritability with prolonged exposure

Know your audience Choose colors and materials that enhance the mood you want to project in your facility Understand that every person will have a somewhat personal reaction to colors

Limited use of red and yellow to get attention Warm browns to create a sense of warmth and home Strong use of red to get attention and stimulate appetite
