What is DAISY? Most Successful and Advanced Technology for Reading Response to dissatisfaction with existing system of talking books (1988) Accessible content with intelligent navigation and bookmarking DAISY Consortium formed in 1996 to establish and manage the DAISY standard Efficient, adaptable, reliable, and easy to use reading system

Myth: No advantage to supporting a redundant format Fact: DAISY is a flexible, efficient, and convenient format for accessible media. Fact: DAISY content created has longevity. Content that you produce today can be used 5, 10 years from now. DAISY is a living standard. Fact: DAISY books can be converted to mp3s, html, large print.

Myth: Nobody is using DAISY Fact: RFB&D, Bookshare, and National Library Service (largest producers of accessible content in the US). Fact: Worldwide DAISY is the most adopted standard for accessible books. Fact: Recent high school graduates have been using books from RFB&D that were DAISY books. Fact: Students who use DAISY books develop a reading habit that lasts beyond their school years. Fact: Universal design principles of DAISY benefit all consumers of the content.

Myth: It’s difficult to produce DAISY books Fact: DAISY is easy to produce with Save as DAISY tool. Fact: Free software can be used to create full text full audio daisy content. Fact: Free DAISY software is available on the Internet to playback daisy books. Fact: There are also several DAISY production tools commercially available.

What is the difference DAISY XML and a full DAISY book? DAISY XML is to a DAISY Book what blueprints are to a finished building. A DAISY XML file is a container of information with instructions about how the information will be presented DAISY books are the compiled results of a DAISY XML file

Creating Braille from DAISY XML Braille Using Duxbury you can take the Save as DAISY xml file and create good Braille The potential to format a document once and then derive multiple output formats is a recognized benefit of DAISY and a worthy goal for any workflow Note: There are still some problems with DAISY to Braille production. This is improving all the time and Duxbury and the DAISY consortium are working hard to produce the best possible Braille from DAISY content
