1 Guard Duty - Sentry Duties

2 Terminal Learning Objectives
React to an inspecting officer. Challenge unknown person (s). Summon the Commander of Relief Apprehend an intruder. Stand an informal Guard Mount. Tell military time.

3 Introduction In the first part of this training you were informed that you will be required to perform guard duty. This may be an informal guard such as those conducted during tactical operations or a formal guard such as those conducted at a military installations. This type of guard duty is commonly reered to as interior guard. Regardless of the type of guard duty you perform, you must know how to act and react.

4 React to an inspecting officer
Stop walking, assume the position of attention, and render a proper hand salute. Execute order arms (when salute is returned ) and remain at attention unless otherwise ordered. At the conclusion of conservation, assume position of attention, render the hand salute, and resume your sentinel duties.

5 Challenge unknown person (s)
Assuming the proper ready position. Issuing the proper challenge. Checking / verifying identification. Taking proper actions if authorized and / or unauthorized.

6 Challenging During Daylight
Upon seeing unknown person(s), come to Port Arms and command “HALT”. When person(s) halts, call out “WHO GOES THERE?”. Upon response, require unknown person(s) to place identification on the ground and back up six paces. While guarding the person (s), check identification.

7 Challenging During Daylight
If authorized to be at your post, return the identification card by laying it on the ground and having its owner pick it up, permit entry, and continue sentry duties. Don't ever let an unknown person get any closer than six paces to you while you are on interior guard duty.

8 Challenging During Darkness
When hearing unknown person (s), come to Port Arms and command “HALT”. When person (s) halts, ask “WHO GOES THERE?’ Upon their response, state “ADVANCE TO BE RECOGNIZED.” As person (s) approaches, command “HALT” when you can see him / her. Do not let them get closer than three to six paces.

9 Challenging During Darkness
Upon response, require unknown person (s) to place ID on the ground and back up six paces. While guarding person (s), check ID.

10 Challenging During Darkness
If authorized to be at your post, return the identification card by laying it on the ground and having its owner pick it up, permit entry, and continue sentry duties. Don't ever let an unknown person get any closer than six paces to you while you are on interior guard duty.

11 Summon the Commander of Relief Within Voice Distance
Call in a loud voice, “COMMANDER OF THE RELIEF, POST 1.” Release person (s) to Commander of the Relief, indicated ID does not match authorization list, or relate circumstances requiring his presence. Return to Sling Arms and continue sentry duties.

12 Summon the Commander of Relief Not Within Voice Distance
Bring unauthorized / unknown person (s) to phone / radio location and contact Commander of the Relief. Guard the person (s) while using phone / radio.

13 Summon the Commander of Relief Not Within Voice Distance
Release person (s) to Commander of the Relief, indicate ID does not match authorization list, or relate circumstances requiring his presence. Return to Sling Arms and continue sentry duties.

14 Apprehending an Intruder
Upon seeing the intruder (s) come to Port Arms and command “HALT”. If intruder (s) fails to stop, repeat command “HALT”. If intruder (s) still fails to stop, follow your special orders as per guard post.

15 Apprehending an Intruder
When the intruder halts, state, “DO NOT MOVE OR I WILL SHOOT.” Summon commander of relief.

16 Use of Deadly Force Self-Defense: When security personnel believe themselves to be in imminent danger of death of serious bodily harm. Property involving national security: Prevent theft, damage, or espionage aimed at property designated by commander as vital national security. To apprehend or prevent escape of an unauthorized individual in vicinity of property or information vital to national security.

17 Use of Deadly Force Prevent theft, damage, or espionage of operable weapons or ammunition inherently dangerous to threes. Serious offenses against a person: prevent serious offenses against persons involving violence. Apprehension: Necessary to apprehend a person believed to have committed an offense specified in the above.

18 Use of Deadly Force Escape: Authorized by commander that is necessary to prevent a prisoner from escape. Lawful Order: Issued by superior authority.

20 Converting Military to Civilian Time
All US Military services use a time numbering system based on a twenty-four hour clock instead of twelve hour. The day begins at one minute after midnight (0001) and ends at midnight the same day (2400). The hours from one in the morning until noon are numbered in four digits ( )

21 Converting Military to Civilian Time
The hours from one in the afternoon until midnight are derived by adding twelve hours to the civilian time. (e.g.. , 3:00pm + 12:00 = 1500).

22 Converting Military to Civilian Time
The military hours from one in the morning until noon are numbered in four digits from 0001 to This is the same for civilian time except in the method of starting the time. In military time 2AM would be stated as zero 200while in the civilian time you would simple drop the zero and the houndred.

23 Converting Military to Civilian Time
The hours from one in the afternoon until midnight are derived by subtracting twelve hours from the military time. (e.g.. , = 0300 or 3 PM)
