Hundreds of knots… There are several hundred knots that one can learn. It’s a very “personal” thing. It is indeed a science unto itself as the smallest of modifications can have BIG impacts! In reality, start small. For survival use, you only need a couple core knots. You can expand your library when you get into more tasks (e.g. – climbing, sutures, etc).

Japanese Mark II Square Lashing (MOD) Replace the Square not for the “shoelace” knot for easy untying. Best if you have already cut pieces of rope.

Constrictor Knot – Shelters/Lashings A good constricting knot for many purposes. Starter and ending knot for single line square or sheer lashing.

Tents & Flys – Midshipman’s Hitch Adjustable loop which keeps line taut

Trucker’s Hitch – Line tension or pulley Common Examples: Use as a pulley to free an object. Tighten a tarp spine line.
