The Good Provided food Most of the Buffalo was used as a food source The hair was used for rope The fur was used for clothing, shelter, and blankets Was used as a trading tool Hides were traded for weapons and horses Was used as a weather indicator The tribes followed the grazing patterns of the Buffalo

The Bad Buffalo nearly became extinct In the late 1800’s there were less than 100,000 Many ranchers were unable to graze their cattle The Buffalo would travel 100 miles a week grazing Many Buffalo were needlessly slaughtered for their hides and the delicacy of certain parts. The Buffalo were chased over “Buffalo jumps”

The Ugly The appearance of the buffalo isn’t appealing to the eye. They cause a lot of damage to the habitat Buffalo eat the prairie down lower than cattle

The Buffalo Today Raised mostly for food Buffalo meat is healthy Raised mostly in State Parks and on Reservations Buffalo can be found in the Badlands Natl. Park and on several Indian Reservations in South Dakota A large herd is located on the Bad River in Stanley County No longer on the endangered species list Today there are an estimated 350,00 Buffalo
