12. I grow up to 11cm x 8cm. yellow yellowI have yellow radiating bands on my domed shell and two yellow stripes on each side of my head. I have a hinged plastron which allows me to close myself up like a box when I get afraid… psssssst that’s why they call me a box turtle. My brother is larger than I am and his tail is also thicker and longer I am only entering middle age, ‘cause I can live to be 100 years or more! What do I Look Like?

13. Where do I Live? I live exclusively in Florida. I especially like swampy, grassy, warm, habitats. You can usually find me around open woodlands, pastures, marshy meadows and sometimes near streams and ponds. I’ve even been known to end up in your backyard, hiding in the grass or even swimming in your pool. Be careful not to run me over with your lawn mower or car.

14. What do I Eat? When I was younger, I liked ‘meat’: snails, insects, slugs, worms, fish, frogs, salamanders, snakes, birds, and eggs. I was a carnivore. But now that I have grown older, I prefer berries, fungi, turnip greens, mulberry greens, dandelion greens, and other fruits and vegetables. I have now become an herbivore. Because I eat both animals and plants, I guess you could call me an omnivore. Color plays a key role in my eating habits.

15. What is my Role in the Environment? I have the ecological role of a seed distributor, ‘cause I love my berries! I also eat some harmful crop insects. Don’t eat me, ‘cause I could be poisonous from eating some mushrooms! I can do damage to some crop plants like tomatoes, lettuce, cucumbers, and strawberries, especially when I’m hungry! I may even destroy the eggs of some ground dwelling birds. It may be that I can even carry western equine encephalitis virus

16. How do I Behave? The outside temperature determines my activity. When it really hot or cold, I don’t move around a lot. I like to be a toasty 29-38 degrees Celsius. In the spring and fall I eat all day long and sleep at night in a shallow indentation in the ground. I do not hibernate like my northern cousins My courtship ritual is composed of 3 phases, circling, biting, shoving phase; a preliminary mounting phase and a copulatory phase. My sex is determined by the temperature of the nest.
