2. 2 Lakes of Nepal  Nepal has different types of lakes:  Glacial Lakes in Himalayan Region.  Tectonic Lakes in Hilly Region  Ox-bow Lakes in Terai Region  Kathmandu Valley was once a lake till 2 million years ago  Panchkhal, Banepa, Dang Surkhet Valleys etc, also were lakes in the past.  Most of the hilly lakes are diminishing due to the shortage of water resources, avalanches, as well as soil erosion and depositional processes.  Lake Tilicho with the area of 4 sq km is the highest located lake or Nepal at an altitude of 4919m. It also can be considered as the highest lake in the world.  One of the largest and renowned lakes of Nepal is Rara Daha (Lake), which is located in Mugu district of Mid- Western Development Region of Nepal. It is located at the elevation of 3353m with an area of about 11 sq km.  Phoksumdo is another important lake of Nepal located in Dolpa district at an elevation of 3613m above sea level. It has an area of approximately 6 sq km with the length and breadth of 4.8 and 1.2 km respectively.  Phewa lake of Pokhara is also one of the important lakes of Nepal located at an elevation of 784m.with area coverage of 4 sq km.  It has been said that Phewa Lake loosed its area of about 2.5 sq km due to the depositional processes made by Harpan Khola in the head ward region.
