Agenda Why Green IT Focus of this study Different Aspects of Green IT Case Study Economical Analysis Compare and Contrast Conclusion 2
3
Why Green IT? 3 Ever growing demand on higher performance resulted in massive power consumption in Information and Communication Technology Green life style became a practice in response to serious climate change concerns Federal laws-tax incentives for companies and building owners that enacted plans to reduce heating, cooling, lighting and energy costs
4
Focus of the Study Main focus: Green IT for Data Servers Increased reliance on information storage, backups, “cloud” concept Data centers are the main cost of IT Electricity bills (power + cooling) main expense of corporations In 2005, 1.2% of total US electricity consumption was for Data Servers ($2.7B) (1) (1)Estimating Total Power Consumption By Servers In The US World 4

Our Approach A green Data Server setup vs. a regular one with the same capacity (150 TB) and same performance Calculate the upfront cost for both Calculate the periodic expenses (power consumption of the servers) Compare the Capitalized Worth (CW) of regular vs. green setup 6

Additional Yearly Saving: Green Server Room Construction Primary concerns when building a server room is size and cooling. Size can be diminished with the use of virtual servers. There are several ways to contribute to cooling and reduce the energy foot print the server room establishes. Efficiency should be maximized with the equipment that is used in the construction of the room and when the room is in use.
14
Green Server Room Construction Things to keep in mind when constructing the server room – Make sure the size of the room is adequate to facilitate the servers that will be in use, and for expansion of the business to use of more servers to install in the room. – Cooling through ventilation in the room can come from both the ground, and through the ducting system of the building. – To maximize efficiency the server room should not exceed more than 300 watts per square foot. A green server room might cost more at start up but the higher efficiencies will create savings.
15
Cooling The Server Room Contain and Exhaust Hot Air – Computers generate heat regardless of the season or time of day. The trick is to contain the heat and exhaust it BEFORE the heat permeates into the surrounding space. PECI achieved this by using a "chimney cabinet" which exhausts the heat from the equipment directly out the back of the cabinet into a return duct or directly to the outside. Use the "new" air-side economizer – A standard economizer is a mechanical device used to reduce energy consumption, usually by leveraging temperature differences and using outside air to cool a space rather than cooling the air through the air conditioner. Since PECI's 2nd strategy raised the server room temperature set-point to 85 degrees, and confined and redirected the hot air from the servers, they were able to use the ambient air from the OFFICE to cool the servers rather than OUTSIDE air. That's so simple, it's brilliant! So as long as the building air is running, typically Monday - Friday, 7am - 6pm, PECI gets "free" cooling! The Average annual cooling cost to power server can be around $533.48 depending on the data centers cooling efficiency or power utilization efficiency. This cost applies to one server.
16
Conclusion There are several ways to make a Data Server Green Green IT usually has more initial investment, but a lot less power consumption and less energy costs Tax incentives also make Green IT cost less 16
