1. Problem Employees have difficulties understanding senior management decisions. Senior management has difficulty explaining the reasons for decisions and strategic plans. Results in low trust and the perception that Loyola lacks open, honest communication.

2. Most Likely Causes A great deal of information is analyzed when management identifies strategic plans and makes decisions.  It is difficult to share all the information because it is complex and lengthy.  There is less time than in the past to take staff from work to share information.  As a result, employees don’t understand how or why decisions are made.

3. Solution The decision was made to use interactive Learning Maps sharing information management uses to make decisions, including:  Changes in current healthcare environment  Recruitment and retention challenges  Changes in consumer expectations  Competition  Financial challenges

4. Development  Gained senior management support  Identified an inter-disciplinary planning team  Identified a vendor experienced in healthcare to help create the map  Piloted the map with employees  Made changes to the map based on employee and management feedback

5. Implementation  125 leaders participated in the Learning Map and recommended implementing it system wide.  42 facilitators were trained  Over 350 sessions were held over 7 months covering all shifts and days of the week  Over 3700 employees participated
