4 Rationale Between 1979 and 1992: Barnstable installed 19 portable temporary classrooms as student enrollment increased during this period of time. This was a temporary measure until a more permanent solution could be determined.

5 Current Status Only 6 portable trailers remain Five of the six trailers are used as educational spaces One trailer houses the administrative office for the Early Learning Center

6 Current Use of Trailers for Educational Instructional Spaces West Barnstable (BWB) – identified as a long- term school facility (TAMS Report 2003) as it is the only north side school in Barnstable. – Two trailers are used for special education, art, music and technology. – School library is located on stage in cafeteria. – Current and future needs require the existing 2 trailers be demolished and replaced with permanent modular classrooms of 3,920 sq. ft.

12 Current Use of Trailers for Educational Instructional Spaces (cont.) Hyannis West Elementary School houses 3 trailers installed in 1992 totaling 3,456 sq. ft. School programs are housed in areas not intended for academic use: – Reading support is held in a former locker room and on the cafeteria stage – Small group math instruction is held in a locker room – Occupational therapy, physical therapy and Gateway instruction are in outdated temporary buildings – Space Assessment (TBA Architects, 2013) identifies Hyannis West Elementary school as having only 89% of the required space needed to educate a population of 340 – Current and future needs require the existing temporary space be replaced with permanent modular classrooms totaling 5,040 sq. ft.

20 Preliminary Review of Space Requirements and Fiscal Impact Appropriation Order Request of $172,000 for: – Design costs to replace 5 trailers over two elementary school campuses totaling 8960 sq.ft. – Funding would be provided from the School Department’s allocation of General Fund reserves, which has an available balance of $4.7 million
