Northwest Natural 12” Pipeline Integrity Project Team Members Jon Ziring Zack Lemmon Long Nguyen Academic Advisor Faryar Etesami NWN Sponsor Advisors Ross Lisle Jodi Wright Final Design Presentation

Introduction  Sections of the pipeline required repair or modification.  When changes are made, the line stopper fittings used to isolate the section are left welded to the pipe.  Though sealed by the fitting, the enclosed pipeline is left with a large cut out section. Mueller Line Stopper Unit

Mission Statement  Design a method for repairing the integrity of the pipeline to near its original condition. This method is to be cheaper, easier, and faster than replacing the line stopper fittings. Hole In Pipeline Due To Fitting Installation

Important Design Criteria Cost: Each unit must cost less than $300. Manufacturability: Materials: In house materials Standard tools and dimensions to simplify production. Feasibility: Accurate placement Alignment: must not rotate. Clearance: able to clear the minimum inner diameter of the access hole. Precision: able to accommodate for deviations in placement and alignment. Reliability: The device should have a minimal probability of failure, as it is to remain a permanent fixture in the pipeline. Simplicity: The device should require minimal training in order to produce, insert, and activate. Obstruction: Minimize bore reduction, maximum 25% bored reduction.

Design Progress

In The Beginning  First Design Solid piece insert Simply rests on pipeline Alignment from side tabs

Problems With Solid Piece Design Access Hole ClearanceWall Dimension Variance

Other Designs  Other Design Concepts Fits Through Access Hole Mechanically Activates Attaches To Pipeline

Additional Problems Too Heavy Tolerances Too Tight Obstructs Flow Through Pipeline Solid Pipe Insert

Permanent Device  Problems Solved Clears Access Hole Loose Tolerances Easily Made  New Problem Must Be Removable Permanent One-Way Insert

Removable Device Locking Mechanism for a Removable Insert

Release The Insert  New Problem Insert Must Separate Itself from the Insertion Tool Design Adapter to Interface Between Insert and Insertion Tool Insertion Tool End

Removable Adapter  Separate Adapter The Adapter Stays With the Insertion Tool Insert is Released from Adapter Removable Adapter Insert

Final Design  Improvements and Optimizations Cost Simplicity Manufacturability Adaptability Functionality Final Design Concept

Design Simplification Before After

Existing Adapter  Reduce Manufacturing Costs by Using Existing Adapter  Disassemble Bypass Plug to Use as Adapter Bypass PlugAdapter

Alignment Bracket  Prevents Insert from Rotating when Activated  Allows Adapter to also be used for Removal  Accurate Flow Alignment

Over-Center Cam-Lock  Rotates 5° Past 90°  Prevents Device from Vibrating Loose  Accommodates Variations in Pipe Lip Dimensions

Over-Center Lock Test Testing Wooden Over-Center Cam-Lock Prototype

Pipe Locking Mechanism Test Testing Pipe Lip Locking Mechanism Prototype
