1. Who are we and what do we do?

2. What is a BCT? An acronym for Behavioral Consultation Team that was formed in 2010 at IUN. It is a campus wide team that provides consultation, makes recommendations for action and coordinates campus resources in response to reports of disruptive or concerning behavior displayed by students, staff, or faculty.

3. Why do we need a BCT? 1.This team was designed to operate as a resource to try to identify troubling behaviors and address them before they escalate into something more serious. 2.Experience shows that tragedies affecting college campuses (for example the Virginia Tech tragedy) are often preceded by warning signs or patterns of behavior. 3.To assist in the maintenance of a safe and non threatening, non violent campus community.

4. What should I report to the BCT? Any behavior that you find troubling that makes you concerned that is not responsive to change through classroom management. Behavior that is disruptive. Behavior that poses a potential threat. Behavior that is potentially harmful to the campus community, including the source of the behavior. If you believe the person may pose a threat of imminent danger of harm to self or others, call IUN Police immediately at 980-6501.

5. How do I make a report to the BCT? By completing the Concerned Persons Referral Form on the website (access to BCT is through Counseling website). By contacting the Co-Chair of the BCT @ badahl.iun.edu or 219-980-6741. After the information is received, consultation by the team will take place. Information provided by referral source will be discussed and appropriate actions will be taken.

6. What authority does the BCT have? The BCT is not a disciplinary body. Persons referred to the team are not interviewed, evaluated, nor in any way psychologically assessed by the team. It does not impose sanctions or administer policy regarding referrals. It can make recommendations to the source of referral, coordinate and share information with campus departments that may take administrative action, consider monitoring the situation without immediate action.
