55 Make your wager

56 Choose an explorer that you think had one of the most significant impacts on California today. Explain why, as well as how California would be different today without his accomplishment(s).

57 Colombus - started the era of Spanish exploration. Without him, it might have been a long time until any Europeans traveled to what is now California. Cortés - one the main people to begin Spanish settlements in what is now Mexico. Without him, Spain might not have had such a strong influence in the area. Cabrillo - was the first European to journey north of Baja. Without him, the land that we live on might not have been explored until much later. Drake - was not only the first English sailor to reach the Americas, but he hindered the Spanish. Without him, the Spanish might have claimed more land than they did. Vizcaíno - sailed north from San Diego to Monterey Bay. Without him, it might have been a lot longer until somebody explored this portion of our coast. Bering - proved that America and Asia are separate continents and gave us more detailed maps of the area. Without him, we might have not know the continents were separate, and we wouldn’t have all the detailed knowledge of the area. Cook - determined from Pacific exploration that the Northwest Passage did not exist. Without him, we might have still been looking for it years later.
