Cones – Small triangles of ceramic material that bend or melt at specific temperatures. Bending means the clay has reached maturity. Dry footed ware – Pottery without glaze on the foot. Can be fired without sticking to the shelf.

Firing – Heating clay to specific temperatures in a kiln. Fuse – To melt under the action of heat.

Glaze – Glass like coating that fuses to the clay in firing. Waterproofs and decorates. Gloss Glaze – Bright, shiny glaze.

Matte glaze – Dull surfaced glaze with no gloss. Transparent Glaze – Clear glaze which reveals clay body beneath.

Opaque Glaze – The opposite of transparent. Kiln wash – A protective coating painted on the kiln shelves to allow for easy removal of glaze drippings.
