Determining Dual Discrepancy for SLD Using The PED Short Cycle Test Results in K-3 Donald J. Frazier, Ph.D.

Locating The State Test Bank Data Go to the NM PED Website Select Special Education Department on the A to Z Menu In the SPED Search Box, type in Dual Discrepancy That will lead you to a web page with a number of different entries The first two entries are the current short cycle results for fall 2009 and spring 2010. Find the MAPS Data for Math and Reading/Language Arts for each grade level (K-3) NOTE: The data used will be from the year prior to the dual discrepancy assessment. Thus, for students referred during 2011-2012, the data used will be from the 2010- 2011 school year. The 2010-2011 data will be listed by the start of school in August.

Kindergarten – Math (Factor 1) Fall 2009 scores MAPS - Kindergarten Mean = 141.4 1.5 Standard Deviation = 17.76 Cutoff = 123.6 or below MAPS – 2 nd Grade Mean = 173.7 1.5 Standard Deviation = 17.31 Cutoff = 156.4 or below MAPS – 3 rd Grade Mean = 188.2 1.5 Standard Deviation = 18.48 Cutoff = 169.7 or below MAPS – 1 st Grade Mean = 158.3 1.5 Standard Deviation = 20.45 Cutoff = 137.9 or below

Examples What can you make of these scores? Student score on MAP kindergarten Math was 129 Student score on MAP 1 st grade Math was 126 Student score on MAP 2 nd grade Math was156 Student score on MAP 3 rd grade Math was 182

Factor 2 Example: Learning Slope Scores STUDENTS Fall Score Winter Score DIFFERENCE Student 1 1645 1690 + 45 Student 2 2005 2008 + 3 Student 3 1880 1942 + 62 Student 4 2076 2125 + 49 Student 5 1889 1915 + 26 Student 6 2109 2250 +141 Student 7** 1748 1730 - 18 Student 8 2067 2101 + 34 Student 9 1776 1941 +165 Student 10 1850 1949 + 99 Student 11 1921 --- ----- NOTE: Students who took only one of the tests must NOT be included in the analysis First, obtain the mean and standard deviation of the difference scores MEAN Difference = 60.6 of all students in this grade who took fall and winter EPS Reading test SD = 58.3 1.5 SD (1.5 X 58.3) = 87.5 Slope Cut Score For Grade = 60.6 – 87.5 = - 26.9 Thus, the individual student would need to have a growth rate that was a decrease of -26.9 or more.
