10.2 Negative and affirmative expressions © and ® 2011 Vista Higher Learning, Inc.10.2-1 —No puedo reconocer ninguno de los lugares que veo en estas fotos.

10.2 Negative and affirmative expressions © and ® 2011 Vista Higher Learning, Inc.10.2-2 Negative words (palabras negativas) deny something’s existence or contradict statements.

10.2 Negative and affirmative expressions © and ® 2011 Vista Higher Learning, Inc.10.2-3 ¿Dejaste algo en la mesa? Did you leave something on the table? No, no dejé nada. No, I didn’t leave anything. Siempre he tratado de mantener el diálogo con ustedes. I have always tried to maintain a dialogue with you. ¡Mentira! Usted no ha hecho ningún esfuerzo. That’s a lie! You have not made any effort.

10.2 Negative and affirmative expressions © and ® 2011 Vista Higher Learning, Inc.10.2-4 In Spanish, double negatives are perfectly acceptable. Most negative statements use the pattern no + [verb] + [negative word]. When the negative word precedes the verb, no is omitted. No lo extraño nunca. I never miss him. Nunca lo extraño. I never miss him. Su opinión no le importa a nadie. His opinion doesn’t matter to anyone. A nadie le importa su opinión. Nobody cares about his opinion.

10.2 Negative and affirmative expressions © and ® 2011 Vista Higher Learning, Inc.10.2-5 Once one negative word appears in an English sentence, no other negative word may be used. In Spanish, however, once a negative word is used, all other elements must be expressed in the negative, is possible. No le digas nada a nadie. No quiero ni pasta ni pizza. Don’t say anything to anyone.I don’t want pasta or pizza.

10.2 Negative and affirmative expressions © and ® 2011 Vista Higher Learning, Inc.10.2-6 The personal a is used before negative and affirmative words that refer to people when they are the direct object of the verb. Nadie me comprende. ¿Por qué será? No one understands me. Why is that? Porque tú no comprendes a nadie. Because you don’t understand anybody. Algunos profesores de economía defienden la globalización. Some economics professors defend globalization. Pues, yo no conozco a ninguno que la defienda. Well, I don’t know any who defends it. Cualquiera can be used to mean any, anyone, whoever, whatever or whichever. When used before a singular noun (masculine or feminine), the –a is dropped. Cualquiera haría lo mismo. Anyone would do the same. Llegarán en cualquier momento. They will arrive at any moment. ¡ATENCIÓN!

10.2 Negative and affirmative expressions © and ® 2011 Vista Higher Learning, Inc.10.2-7 Before a masculine, singular noun, alguno and ninguno are shortened to algún and ningún. ¿Han sufrido algún daño? Have they suffered any harm? No hemos comprado ningún artículo de lujo últimamente. We haven’t bought any luxury items lately.

10.2 Negative and affirmative expressions © and ® 2011 Vista Higher Learning, Inc.10.2-8 Tampoco means neither or not either. It is the opposite of también. ¿No quieren hacer un esfuerzo para solucionar la crisis? Pues yo tampoco. They don’t want to make an effort to resolve the crisis? Well, I don’t either. Mi hermano es muy idealista, y yo también. My brother is very idealistic, and so am I.

10.2 Negative and affirmative expressions © and ® 2011 Vista Higher Learning, Inc.10.2-9 The conjunction o... o (either... or) is used when there is a choice to be made between two options. Ni... ni (neither... nor) is used to negate both options. Debo hablar o con el gerente o con la dueña. I have to speak with either the manager or the owner. No me interesa ni la política ni la economía. I am interested neither in politics nor in economics. In the conjunction o... o, the first o can be omitted. Debo hablar con el gerente o con la dueña. In the conjunction ni... ni, the first ni can be omitted when it comes after the verb. No me interesa la política ni la economía. However, when the first ni goes before the verb, no...ni can be used instead of ni...ni. La inmigración no/ni ha subido ni ha bajado. ¡ATENCIÓN!

10.2 Negative and affirmative expressions © and ® 2011 Vista Higher Learning, Inc.10.2-10 The conjunction ni siquiera (not even) is used to add emphasis. Ni siquiera se despidieron antes de salir. They didn’t even say goodbye before they left. Nada pudo lograr que se solucionara el conflicto, ni siquiera la visita del ministro. Nothing could lead them to settle the conflict, not even the visit from the minister —Palos Verdes ni siquiera es territorio mexicano y su rancho ya no existe, desapareció.
