GRAMMAR! PHRASES AND CLAUSES - FANBOYS

WHAT’S THE DIFFERENCE? Between a phrase and a clause? A phrase is a group of related words that is used as a single part of speech and that does not contain BOTH a verb and a subject. It can’t stand alone. Examples: Prepositional Phrases (used as an adj or adv) - to the pool, at the beach, instead of ice cream Participial Phrases (used as a adj) - watching the clock, peeling the apples, shooting the ball Gerund Phrases (used as a noun) – bringing me the newspaper, running the 100-meter dash Infinitive Phrases (noun, adj or adv) – to make tomales, to shoot the ball, to beat the drum
