2. CREATE YOUR DOUBLE ENTRY JOURNAL You will fold your paper into two columns. Label the columns as follows: Left column – Quoted material from the text Crease – Symbol representing effect Right Column – The effect the quote had on me

3. SYMBOLS REPRESENTING EFFECT ! – This makes me think of… I’m making a connection with… * - This is a significant statement about the topic ? – I don’t understand... I wonder…. I have questions about… *Make sure you punctuate your quotes correctly: “This is a quote” (73).

4. READ THE TEXT. Silently read the text for basic comprehension. As you read, keep in mind that you are going to identify quotes that had an effect on you. After, reading the entire selection, record the quotes that had an effect on you in your double entry journal. You will need to include at least six quotes from the text.

5. SCAN FOR SIGNIFICANT QUOTES & RECORD Step 1: When you find a quote that relates to the ideas for which you are annotating, record the quote in the left column of your journal. Make sure you use correct punctuation and include the page number. Step 2: Explain the effect the quote had on you as the reader in the right hand column using the provided sentence starters on Slide 3. Step 3: Write the symbol indicating the effect the quote had on you on the crease in between your two columns. *Make sure you punctuate your quotes correctly: “This is a quote” (73).
