3. How They Use Data Mining Photo courtesy California Department of Corrections Execution chamber at San Quentin State Prison in California.  Statistical Data is collected by the Criminal Justice System and the Census Bureau  It is collected in order to determine the character, scope, and source of crime  It is used for the purposes of understanding crime and to aid criminologists in suggesting ways to the Criminal Justice System to enact laws and programs to reduce crime and recidivism rates.
