Statistical Data is collected by the Criminal Justice System and the Census Bureau It is collected in order to determine the character, scope, and source of crime It is used for the purposes of understanding crime and to aid criminologists in suggesting ways to the Criminal Justice System to enact laws and programs to reduce crime and recidivism rates.

Criminologists study data on crime to scientifically advise our local, state, and national policy makers. If the current question on lawmaker’s minds is “Should we continue capital punishment?” they would want information like the charts in the previous three slides depict in order to make an informed decision.
