Joint Information Systems Committee Supporting Higher and Further Education DNER the fabric of learning and research DNER programme team

Joint Information Systems Committee DNER Vision An integrated information environment for the further and higher education community coordinated by JISC and developed in a collaborative landscape where responsibility is shared and duplication minimised.

Joint Information Systems Committee Overview High acronymic density Graphically challenged Fanciful mixed metaphors to conclude Deflected questions

Joint Information Systems Committee (A Giddens) The ‘third way’ Practices are being lifted out (disembedded) from traditional context and rearticulated in a network space – Scholarly communication – Learning and teaching – Identity, rights, authenticity

Joint Information Systems Committee Foundational/institutional change – ‘publication’ – pki – jstor (Changing) management of learning and informational resources central to (changing) educational practice The fabric of learning and research – pool uncertainty

Joint Information Systems Committee What is the DNER? A managed collection of electronic resources – at JISC data centres, JISC services, publishers’ servers, and beyond – about which JISC has agreements for access by further and higher education or has badged as being of high quality for this community An integrated environment for service delivery – systemic coherence - supported by infrastructural services (e.g. authentication) and allowing flexible use. Supported by development, promotion and other activities (JISC)

Joint Information Systems Committee Real service Understand and meet the needs of a variety of user communities … and develop production information services... informed by R&D work.

Joint Information Systems Committee The DNER Collections Environment A development programme Collections policy Preservation strategy Service delivery framework Interoperability and architecture

Joint Information Systems Committee DNER ‘collections’ Present Examples: – Archives hub – Web of Science – JSTOR – Arts and Humanities primary data – electronic journals – Off-air recording archive – AXIS Database Future Examples: – KnowUK – AMICO – SCRAN – Streamed Videos e.g. for teaching surgery – Oral history collections – Radio and television indices with links to broadcasts

Joint Information Systems Committee JISC Collections Policy http://www.jisc.ac.uk/cei/dner_colpol.html support learning, teaching, and research all types of digital information critical mass high demand collections unique collections Collections policy being revised Content mapping exercise Charging working group Further education - national learning network

Joint Information Systems Committee Images and moving images Image coordinator – JISC Distributed Image Service – Managing agent Moving images – Managing agent and advisory service Value in learning

Joint Information Systems Committee Some issues Central to research and learning activity... Expansion of objectives – value for money + create a culture of use – building a comprehensive learning and research resource – securing future access to the ‘intellectual record’ – make ‘content’ come alive in learning environments

Joint Information Systems Committee Some issues Managing a rich … – ‘documents’ – ‘data’ – ‘scientific and cultural heritage’ – ‘instructional materials’ ….and complex resource base – information resource, – collection, – environment

Joint Information Systems Committee Issues Work with learning and research communities to support new behaviours in – Scholarly communication – Learning and teaching Balance of distribution Support for exploitation

Joint Information Systems Committee Digital Preservation Focus Develop long-term retention strategy for HE/FE in UK Focus for development of practices, policies and strategies establish and manage a National Digital Preservation Coalition (NDPC) generate support,inter-working and collaborative funding from appropriate agencies in UK & world-wide disseminate and publish results and outcomes

Joint Information Systems Committee Service delivery Data centres AHDS, Data Archive RDN - subject gateways UK Mirror Cache Distributed projects and services Advisory services Information brandscape

Joint Information Systems Committee Service delivery Systemic coherence Ensure that the service framework supports this Articulate services – role in distributed environment – links eg mirror, cache, resource discovery Articulate advisory services Communication and marketing strategy (with JISC Assist)

Joint Information Systems Committee Architectures... Infrastructure services (Middleware*) Content delivery services Fusion services

Joint Information Systems Committee Some issues Difficult! Hearts and minds Different levels of influence Identity, branding and loyalty Production services in changing environment Articulate interoperability framework

Joint Information Systems Committee DNER A collection with the right connections...

Joint Information Systems Committee And they said... “This preservation thing is a big problem.” “Digital IP issues are complicated.” “We are building legacy systems as we speak.” “We have more or less failed to do interoperability.” “One in a 7,000 year experience.”

Joint Information Systems Committee A development programme Dner infrastructure (3M) Enhancing the DNER for learning and teaching (10M) Formative evaluation integral to development Mechanisms to support ‘assisted take-up’ and transfer of experience and results

Joint Information Systems Committee A development programme (1) Formative evaluation (1) Virtual learning environments/digital libraries (4) Museum and archive content (5) Moving picture and sound content (3) Images and other content (5) Geospatial studies (2) Subject portals Enhancements to JISC services (13) Electronic books (1)

Joint Information Systems Committee A development programme (2) (further investigation) Satellite imagery/geospatial content Moving image medical content Image digitisation and management Electronic books Article discovery, location and delivery Digital libraries/mle Working with LTSN* Supporting studies

Joint Information Systems Committee A cog DNER learndirect National Electronic Library for Health UKOnline National Grid for Learning National Learning Network Netful of Jewels People’s Network

Joint Information Systems Committee And... Utility of shared activity Accelerate development Achieve value Concentrate and transfer experience and expertise Focus for collaboration (cog)

Joint Information Systems Committee The fabric of learning and research

Joint Information Systems Committee Further Information about the DNER http://www.jisc.ac.uk/pub/index.html email assist@jisc.ac.uk Collections - alicia.wise@kcl.ac.uk Images - catherine.grout@kcl.ac.uk Preservation - nbeagrie@aol.com tba...
