1 What was the New Deal Coalition? Describe the roles and activities of labor unions and the urban population in the New Deal Coalition By Alex Homick, Adam Howard, and Tim Catalanati

2 What was the NDC? New Deal Coalition (NDC)- diverse groups dedicated to support Democratic Party Included African Americans, White Southerners, unionized workers, and various urban groups

3 NDC 1933-1941, union membership grew from 3 million to more than 8 million party because of the Wagner Act The AFL was made up of crafts such as plumbers and electricians. AFL did not support industry wide unions such as automobile and rubber

4 NDC John Lewis (United Mine Workers) and Walter Reuther (Automobile Workers) formed Committee for Industrial Organization. Signed unskilled and semiskilled laborers Officially split from AFL in 1938 and became Congress of Industrial Organizations

5 NDC Sit-Down Strike- type of strike wen workers sat down at their work place so strikebreakers could not carry on production General motors and Ford had violent strikes On Memorial Day, 1937, police attacked strikers, women and men, were beat.

6 NDC Large Northern cities (New York and Chicago) had political organizations that provided services for votes Various ethnic groups and religions supported Roosevelt because of his New Deal Labor Laws and work-relief programs
