Tea Britain is a tea-drinking nation. Every day they drink 165 million cups of the stuff and each year around 144 thousand tons of tea are imported. Tea in Britain is traditionally brewed in a warmed china teapot, adding one spoonful of tea per person and one for the pot. Most Britons like their tea strong and dark, but with a lot of milk.

SCONES Ingredients 3 cups flour 1/2 cup sugar 5 teaspoons baking powder 1/2 teaspoon salt 3/4 cup butter 1 egg, beaten 1 cup milk Directions Preheat oven to 200 degrees C. Lightly grease a baking sheet. In a large bowl, combine flour, sugar, baking powder, and salt. Cut in butter. Mix the egg and milk in a small bowl, and stir into flour mixture. Knead briefly. Roll dough out into a round. Bake 15 minutes.

FLAPJACKS Ingredients 1/2 cup butter or margarine 1/2 cup brown sugar 4 tablespoons golden syrup or corn syrup 3 cups rolled oats 1/4 cup raisins Directions Preheat the oven to 175 degrees. In a saucepan combine the butter, brown sugar and golden syrup. Cook until butter and sugar melt. Stir in the oats and raisins. Pour into a baking pan. Bake for 30 minutes until the top is golden. Cut into squares.

APPLE CRUMBLE Ingredients Half a packet puff pastry 1 tablespoon butter, melted 3 apple - peeled and chopped 3/8 cup flour 3/8 cup almonds 1/2 cup white sugar 1/4 teaspoon cinnamon 3 tablespoons butter, chilled 1/4 teaspoon vanilla extract Directions In a small bowl, mix flour, almonds, 1/2 cup sugar, and cinnamon together. Add chilled butter and vanilla extract. Rub to make bread crumbs. Place pastry on a large baking sheet. Brush with melted butter or margarine. Arrange apples in the center of the pastry, leaving a border of pastry. Spoon almond over the apples. Bake at 175 degrees C for 30 minutes.

DEVONSHIRE TEA Try Devonshire tea! Make tea and serve it with scones, clotted cream and jam. It’s wonderful. You’d better not eat it if you are on a diet.
