International Labour Organization (1996-2015). Latest statistics estimate that there are 21-30 million people currently enslaved worldwide each year through human trafficking. Free the Slaves (2007-2014).

Who While any person can be a victim of sex trafficking there are specific groups that are targeted by traffickers because of their vulnerabilities. These include runaway/homeless youth, undocumented immigrants, those living in poverty and oppression, victims of domestic violence/sexual abuse, and those living in areas of conflicts/war. Polaris, Freedom Happens Now (2015)

The Physical Toll It is estimated that 30,000 victims die each year from abuse, neglect, torture, and disease due to sex trafficking. P. Francis Murphy Initiative for Peace and Justice (2015). After becoming a victim of human trafficking the average life span is reduced to only 7 years. 7WTRF.com, Coalition Formed to combat Human Trafficking in Ohio (2013) The average life span of a child caught in the sex slave trade is two years. They are either beaten to death, contract HIV/AIDS, contract bacterial meningitis, or overdose on drugs forced on them.” Manna Freedom, What is Sex Trafficking?

The Emotional Toll Survivors of human trafficking experience PTSD, substance abuse, anxiety, depressive states, and dissociative states that can lead to memory loss, and studies show 39-66 percent of survivors experience suicidal thoughts. Office for victims of Crime Training and Technical Assistance Center, Human Trafficking (2012) Researchers have found that mistreatment during childhood actually creates physical changes in the brain that leave the adolescent/adult more vulnerable to depression and anxiety “Childhood Maltreatment Can Leave Scars In The Brain”, Jon Hamilton, NPR News (2013).

The Social Toll There are great social repercussions that victims face after being rescued from slavery. Their perceptions of life and society have been supplanted by victimization. They were robbed of a healthy atmosphere in which to grow. Their well being was sacrificed for money and their potential to experience a joyful life was not developed. They will have much to overcome in the restoration process of their lives. This is possible with Jesus Christ. National Colloquium Report on DMST Residential Programs (2012).

Spiritual Toll “Service providers should offer the opportunity for the DMST survivor to have spiritual needs met as well as mental, physical and social health needs”. National Colloquium Report on DMST Residential Programs (2012).

Tactics of Traffickers Traffickers often use tactics such as promises of love and security, education, or employment. Recruiters are often women and youth used to lure the victim into a feeling of safety. Recruiters are often women and youth designed to make the targeted victim feel safe. Traffickers come in many disguises; small business owners, factory owners, boyfriends, familiar faces, family operated businesses, gangs, and organized crime. Polaris, Freedom Happens Now (2015).

Truckstops TAT ( http://www.truckersagainsttrafficking.org/ ) http://www.truckersagainsttrafficking.org/ Statistics on sex trafficking in truck stops is undetermined. This is due to the transient nature of truck drivers, and the obscurity of many truck stops from the community. Johns and pimps use code language over the radio, online trucking boards, and truckers make use of headlight signals to indicate they are in the market to buy sex. Polaris Project (2013).

Strip Clubs Strip Clubs may appear to be legal, but in reality, these establishments proliferate sex trafficking. The women are sometimes adults, but also may be minors. The girls may also be forced to engage sexually with club patrons. Polaris Project (2013). Ohio has a high ratio of strip clubs. Rescue and Restore Coalition (2013).
