A small pulse transmitter is mounted on the beacon which is triggered by the vessels radar pulse. The mark will be displayed on the screen only intermittently. The true echo of the beacon will appear on the screen in front of the identification signal.

Ramarks transmit pulses continuously or to special time schedules, rather than on receipt of a vessel’s radar pulse.

SARTS detect the incoming radar pulse from a searching aircraft or ship and respond by transmitting a distinctive signal of 12 blips extending approximately 8 nautical miles outward from the SART’s position.
