Basic Info cont. Purpose: To determine the clients ability to demonstrate the basic skills necessary to hike independently. Assessment Measures: Five Skill levels broken into Focal Points (see later slides) Supplies needed: Pictures of and actual equipment used to hike. Reliability: None reported Who can access: Anyone able to 1. Read 2. Basic knowledge of disability's 3. Moderately strong hiking skills and techniques Comments:1979 ICAN was used in classroom, no report forms for medical charts, 1990 version specifically for medical charts.

Skill Level 1:Select proper attire for hiking Focal Points Comfortable pair of high-topped shoes or boots Thick and thin pair of socks Comfortable pair of pants Suitable Shirt Suitable Rain Gear Suitable Jacket

Skill Level 2:Mature pacing without assistance Focal Points Hike with steps that are a consistent distance apart and with an even pace Focus eyes ahead and frequently at feet for obstacles Watch for fallen or low-hanging obstacles

Skill Level 3: Uphill and downhill hiking technique Focal Points Hike uphill with the weight on balls of feet Maintain a slow, steady pace with rest intervals approximately every five to seven minutes Hike uphill with weight on the heels and knees bent slightly

Skill Level 4: Moving under obstacles Focal Points Check for loose braches or rocks before proceeding under obstacles Check for safety on other side of rocks Help others behind him/her

Skill Level 5:Moving over obstacles Focal Points Check for loose branch's or rocks Check safety on other side of obstacle Help others behind him/her
