The Middle Kingdom

The New Kingdom  Known as Egypt’s expansive period  Egypt expanded its borders through military conquest and became a world power.  Pharaohs were all powerful, all the pharaohs were buried in the same geographic area called the Valley of the Kings.

The Pyramids of Egypt  The Step Pyramid of Djoser  The Maidum Pyramid  The Bent Pyramid  The Red Pyramid  The Great Pyramid  The Pyramid Of Khafre  The Pyramid Of Menkaure  The Pyramid Of Pepi 2

The Step Pyramid Of Djoser  It was intended to hold Pharaoh Djoser’s mummified body.  It started traditional flat roofed mastaba, but by the end of his 19 year reign, it had risen 6 step layers and stood 204 feet high.  Making it the largest building of it’s time.

The Maidum Pyramid  It was influenced by the Step Pyramid Of Djoser.  The first Egyptian pyramid with an above ground burial chamber.  Today on the 3 highest step are visible above the shifting sands, fallen debris, and sloping base.

The Bent Pyramid  The first Egyptian attempt at a smooth-sided pyramid.  The cult of Snefru was centered at the Bent Pyramid, even though he was never buried there.

The Red Pyramid  It boasted a single burial chamber that was accessed through 2 smaller chambers.  It was the first true pyramid.  Snefru may have been buried here.  It seems likely that his son, Pharaoh Khufu, finished the construction after his father’s death quickly.

The Great Pyramid  The worlds largest pyramid.  It was order to be constructed by Pharaoh Khufu.  It has 3 burial chambers.  The first is underground, carved into bedrock, the second is above ground called the queens chamber, the third is the kings chamber, placed exactly at the center.  It has 2.3 million stone blocks weighing 2.5 to 15 tons each.

The Black Pyramid  This pyramid is known as The Black Pyramid because of its dark color.  It was made out of mud rock and clay, instead of stone.  Constructed by Pharaoh Amenemhat 3 at Dashur.  Pharaoh Amenemhat 3 reigned for 46 years and his reign was known as a very peaceful and prosperous time in Egypt.

Temple Medinet Habu  Located on the West Bank of Luxor, Medinet Habu is the Arabic name for a huge temple complex second only to Karnak in size and better preserved.  Pharaohs Hatshepsut and Tutmosis III built a small temple dedicated to Amun on the site. Next to their temple, Ramesses III built his mortuary temple, Medinet Habu’s largest standing monument.  Ramesses III then enclosed both structures within a massive mud-brick wall that included storehouses, workshops, and residences.

Temple of Kom Ombo  Situated on a high dune overlooking the Nile, The Temple of Kom Ombo is an unusual double temple built during the Ptolemaic dynasty.  The actual temple was started by Ptolemy VI Philometor in the early second century BC.  The Temple of Kom Ombo is actually two temples and everything is duplicated along the main axis.  There are two entrances, two courts, two colonades, two hypostyle halls and two sanctuaries.
