WHAT WE KNOW ABOUT MARS

1.What’s the name of the dead volcano on Mars? 2.When do dust storms occur on Mars? 3.How much would you weigh on Mars? DO THE MATH! 4.How much closer to Mars will Phobos be after 100 years? 5.What’s inside Deimos? 6.Why are there valleys and dry river beds on Mars? 7.How many photographs did Pathfinder and Lander together send back to Earth? 8.Where on Mars did the two Rovers land? 9.The Sojourner Rover found a rock called: ‘HAEMETITE’; why is this important? 10.How far have the two Rovers travelled on Mars? http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=5TaP8YMM524&featu re=relatedhttp://www.youtube.com/watch?v=5TaP8YMM524&featu re=related Mars Rover launch & landing

Mars is like Earth because it has: clouds, ice at north pole, valleys mountains & volcanoes and because a day on Mars is 24 hours and 39 minutes It has a summer and winter.

THE PLANET MARS Mars has very big dust storms. These storms can areas from 320 km to 3,000 km Sometimes they cover ALL THE PLANET!

Its GRAVITY is only 38% of the Earth’s gravity. A 100 kg person would only weigh 62 kg on Mars.

MARS’ TWO MOONS: DEIMOS AND PHOBOS DEIMOS: 27 km across PHOBOS: 15 km across

Mars has three things necessary for life as we know it: carbon, hydrogen, oxygen and nitrogen sunlight and heat inside the planet liquid water

MARS PATHFINDER – JULY 1997 THE MARS MISSIONS MARS ODYSSEY PROBE – OCT 2001 MARS GLOBAL SURVEYOR - 1996 SPIRIT ROVER – Jan 2004

SOJOURNER ROVER This probe found evidence of water and HAEMETITE: a rock only found in or near water. Both Sojourner Rover and Opportunity Rover are still working on Mars!

MARS PATHFINDER Pathfinder & Rover sent over 17,000 photos to Earth. From these probes we now know that: Mars was warm with liquid water on its surface millions of years ago. At that time Mars had a thicker atmosphere. MARS ROVER LANDING ON MARS
